A Peek Into a Spy's Mental Edge; When Time is of the Essence

A subtle message lies within this book, namely, that "structure" equals "behavior." When circumstances require action, having a habitual method (i.e a structured approach) to quickly analyze the situation and select the best response gives you an edge over your opponent. The author shows how the US Air Force analyzed ace pilots to determine why they won more dogfights, and how that discovery was generalized into a powerful behavioral approach to rapid decision-making for spies in stressful situations. The method doesn't guarantee success, but it does improve your chances and builds confidence.
Spies play a dangerous game. The movie portrayals of the espionage game are not far off, says the author. Novel gadgets rarely win the day. Spies want proven technologies, including the best ways to think in stressful situations.
This book uses the author's thought process during an attempted robbery where he, the spy, is victim as an example of his structured thought process, one that major spy agencies and the military actually use. Those who employ it benefit from better decisions and faster response times. In other words, this structured method of thinking, applied repeatedly in a repetitive or "looping" fashion, is more effective than the less structured, more improvisational thinking that most of us use to deal with the situations that life throws at us. The robbery's outcome may not be what you expect; but no spoilers here.
I particularly like the author's writing style and his sharp focus. This book has a message to deliver. There is no fluff or filler. Happily, there is a thread of suspense as he weaves his story about the attempted robbery through the explanation of the method. Near the end, he analyzes the thought process he went through in deciding to write the book in comparison to a reader's decision to purchase it. At first this seemed disingenuous. On reflection it makes perfect sense as an example of the game theory outcomes he uses to frame strategy in a stressful situation.
This book is a starting point. Anyone wishing to employ these methods likely requires both practice and further reading. The book does not have suggestions for other books on the subject or a bibliography. One star deducted on that account.

Smart and useful

I just finished A Spy's Guide to Thinking by John Braddock, a former CIA spy. There are some really interesting ideas. It's well written, too, and short (45 minute read). We're going to incorporate some of the "well worn, time tested" ideas into our reporting / DSS.
The idea of D-A-D-A is particularly powerful. After World War 2 the US Air Force studied aerial dogfights to understand why one pilot won and the other lost. They learned that winning pilots go through a process faster than losing pilots: Data, Analysis, Decision, Action (D-A-D-A). It happens very quickly in a dogfight.
The faster a pilot could collect data, analyze it, take a decision then act the more likely he was to win the dogfight. It's a repeating cycle, DADA after DADA after DADA as the dogfight changes. The US Air Force used this way of thinking to develop radically new and different aircraft like the F15 and the F16.
“For close-in dogfights, the radar automatically acquires enemy aircraft, and this information is projected on the head-up display. The F-15's electronic warfare system provides both threat warning (radar warning receiver) and automatic countermeasures against selected threats.” Wikipedia

Any competitor left looking at standard reports and manually doing his DADA would be much slower, perhaps fatally so. How many cycles would it take for you to shoot your competitors out of the sky?

Not just another spy book

I am usually very cautious of unsolicited book review requests, but John reached out to me after reading a few of my reviews and promised a quick read. How could I resist. I have been in a season of military books or themes and this one is no different.
This book is a treatise on how to process those daily moments of life through some lenses that the rest of us don’t. The over all gist of this books is two principles Data-Analysis-Decision-Action (DADA) and Positive-Sum/Zero-Sum/Negative-Sum framework. This slimmed down version is of course, a child of the infamous OODA Loop. Said another way, John is trying to get us to think about life, business and relationships through a simple story of a man asking for his cell phone on a subway while in a foreign country on a mission. What we do with the data, how we analyze, the decisions we have before us and the actions we take, all can influence the outcome of a situation.
image I found this book to be quite intriguing to remind me of things that I already know but was reminded of very quickly. I found this book interesting of course because it was short, concise in some areas, and John’s illustrations help to bring the concepts quickly to light. The book did challenge me to look into the OODA Loop and one of the best articles I found was from the Art of Manliness Site, titled; The TAO of Boyd: How to Master the OODA Loop. John did make me think and held my attention as he built on each concept. However I did struggle a bit in that the information, with the goal of being presented in a cohesive and appealing manner, also left me shaking my head. There is no preparing (ah maybe that was the point?) the opening story and then immediate shift to the concepts, back to the story etc. Also the book ends abruptly with the dangling bait of another booklet in the series.
The ending “A Spy’s Guide To Strategy” just ended with no context, no prelude, nothing. I may have gotten a bad e-copy (benefit of the doubt) but it reminded me of the alarming and disruptive shift in chapter one. I was a little disappointed in that I had hoped to see more of how the DADA principle was helpful to others and gave back to others and relationships, but then, with at title that includes the word “SPY” that is probably not going to happen. I did like the way he brought world events and political situations through the lenses he was advocating and was in the heart of the original (OODA Loop). I also think John did a good job of showing that when our circumstances change, we often fail to shift our perspective and instead continue to try to see the world as we feel it should be. I would recommend this booklet, and hope there are others, better yet combine your booklets into a book and count me in. Thanks for sharing this work with me.
