Good-humored, still very useful, though of course a bit dated

This COMPLEAT (note spelling) I HATE TO COOK BOOK is essentially a skillful combination of Peg Bracken's best-selling I HATE TO COOK BOOK and its sequel, the APPENDIX TO THE I HATE TO COOK BOOK, both from the 1960s. Actually, not all THAT skillful, as the two separate chapters on day-by-day entrees manage to commingle "Sweep Steak," "Swipe Steak" and "Swoop Steak" recipes in a way that indicates the strong family resemblance among all three. Given the passage of time, some of the cleverness has gone from the recipes, as when the reader realizes that Bracken's "Strawberry Nincompoop" dessert is really the same "Strawberries Romanoff" we've all gotten familiar with over the past fifty years (strawberries, brown sugar, sour cream; dunk). In retrospect, it probably would have been better to make the "Cooking If Alone" chapter a little bigger, and perhaps take the two soup, one salad and one salad-dressing recipe that constitute the last gasp of "Luncheon With the Girls," move them to more topical chapters, and then put "Luncheon" to a merciful death.
On the plus side, this book is still a gathering of good humor and good cooking, and even today a book that emphasizes meal prep without pre-cooked foodstuffs or microwaving is a very useful thing to have. One small warning: even this compendium does not contain all of Peg Bracken's recipes. In order for me to reclaim fondly remembered recipes like her "Big Stuffed Macaroni" (Manicotti) and "Lamaloha Loaf," I had to separately order an old copy of APPENDIX TO THE I HATE TO COOK BOOK because they didn't make this COMPLEAT version, alas.
