Best general chemistry text for problem solving

This is without a doubt the best general chemistry text I've seen. It is brief and to the point (unlike Kotz & Treichel, for example) but it doesn't gloss over the tougher ideas (like Brown, LeMay, Bursten) and you come away with a very thorough understanding of basic chemistry, more so than I would have thought possible after using other introductory books.
But most importantly, it is an excellent problem solving book, that with some work will give you everything you need to do great in more advanced classes. The many examples are clearly explained and well-chosen, and will take you through the whole range of end-of-chapter problems.
Excellent for any 1-st year, science-major oriented course, and the best for self study/thorough review. I highly recommend the solutions manual, too. It works through the solutions with the same quality as the book examples, in case you have any lingering confusion.

I've used this textbook last quarter for gen chem I and I rented it. I decided to purchase it this time seeing on how I'm using it again for gen chem II and it's very informative. The author breaks down things multiple times to ensure that you grasp the concept at hand.

not bad. the newest edition of this book was required for my chem class, but this was exactly the same. dont bother with the newer one
