Great book and he has others

Finding a book this great renews my faith in humanity. One sign of an excellent book is a great bibliography, this one is such a one, it is divided into books, articles, reports and websites -- as few are but as all should be. Not a lot of books but they are all excellent books, same for the rest of the bibliography. Cockett is a pro. Here is a review from Foreign Affairs:

“Cockett, a former correspondent for The Economist, has traveled to every corner of Myanmar (also known as Burma) to uncover the roots of its troubled condition. The Burmans, the majority ethnic group (who are mostly Buddhist), live on the country’s central plain. They are surrounded by a horseshoe-shaped ring of “hill tribes,” many of which are Christian and which are classified into 135 officially recognized ethnic groups. This picture is further complicated by the legacies of the British colonial period, when the country experienced an influx of Hindus and Muslims from various parts of India, as well as Chinese merchants, Iraqi Jews, and others seeking commercial opportunities. Faced with so much ethnic and religious diversity, postindependence military regimes tried to “purify” the country through assimilationist education and language policies, exclusionary citizenship laws, and a military-dominated economic model, all of which have only exacerbated divisions. Cockett’s lucid analysis of these complexities makes clear his affection for the country. But he evinces little hope that the current quasi-military regime or the opposition can overcome these conflicts and make Myanmar anything more than a “stunted democracy.”

A Good Summary of Burma Past & Present

The book, which is organized into two sections, provides an interesting portrait of Burmese history and current events.

In the first section, Burma’s history is told through the lens of the “plural society.” In a plural society people mix but do not combine; they have their own culture, language, religion, etc. As individuals they meet only in the marketplace to buy and sell.

The author argues that the British created a pluralistic society in Burma by encouraging the immigration of non-Buddhist’s from other parts of the empire. His contention is that this and other colonial / pre world war II policies continues to contribute to Burma’s current problems. While I think that here is some truth to this, I thought the point was taken too far. At times the story became a bit tedious to read as the author digressed to tie one of Burma’s current problems back to the concept of pluralism and British imperialism.

The second section of the book deals with more recent events. It summarizes the rise of the National League for Democracy, Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, and the transition to a relatively less repressive government led by Thein Sein. It unfortunately ends before the December 2015 election. To me, this section of the book was the most interesting as it described Burma’s problems in a more international and contemporary context. I thought that the authors use of first person accounts of the historic oppression and current political climate gave a unique perspective on the country.

I found the book to be a good and interesting read and recommend it to those interested in Burma or southeast Asian history & current events.

Nicely written and well argued book. I was looking for a book that would give me a good understanding of the current issues facing contemporary Burma and found it in this book. Highly recommended.

Dr. Robert Spinner is a neurosurgeon in Rochester, Minnesota. He is affiliated with multiple hospitals in the area, including Mayo Clinic and Mayo Clinic - Saint Marys Hospital. I have been looking for Generation One comics made by the long deceased DW company for years. Fortunately I found this one, and did not hesitate to order it be sent internationally to where I live. UPS delivered very fast, considering it was sent from the other side of this planet and survived my country's notorious custom clearance.

The book came in the same box with another two action figures I ordered Transformers Generations Voyager Class Autobot Springer Figureand Transformers Generations Voyager Class Blitzwing Figure. The box was pretty neat, no deformation or damage observed. The UPS staff who contact me about custom clearance and the delivery man were both quite polite, responsible and efficient. I would give UPS a 5+ star for such quality of service.

Inside the box was stuffed with Amazon's airbags to protect those goods. However despite such careful protection, the book came with slightly curled edge and a little torn on top of its spine. Not serious, but enough to make it different from other books I ordered from Amazon. As a Transformers fan I have bought quite a few graphic novels, paperback and hardcover, and have never got one with damage in its spine, or have the front page curled up. For this reason I give 4 stars to this book.

The content of this book was fabulous, as always would be. Greed and hatred, faith and love, three parties- human, Autobots and Decepticons intertwined together, and finally Autobot won. Not without sacrifices. I love how this Optimus mourned for the losses of his brothers, how hurt it was to see them perish; it just made those Cybertronians more humanized.

Great job IDW, and please print more of these books.

A great story and a great book! Art is awesome and the story keeps you turning pages. Optimus and the Autobots are back to take on Megatron and the Decepticons! What's happened since the last time the Transformers were seen? And who's that big Green guy marching his way toward a city? Its all here! Get your optics on this one!

Item arrivedin good condition. Story brought back the memories of when they were originally issued. Still diffierent from the othermstories though doesnt have the feeling ofmthe original.

About the Author

TONY MAGISTRALE is Professor of English and Director of Undergraduate Advising at the University of Vermont. He has published extensively in the field of Gothic Studies including two books on Poe, The Poe Encyclopedia (Greenwood 1997) and Poe's Children: Connections Between Tales of Terror and Detection (1999). He is also the author of The Dark Descent: Essays Defining Stephen King's Horrorscape (Greenwood 1992).

About the Author
Col. Samuel Russ Harris, Jr., served as commander of one of the first B-29 Heavy Bombardment Groups to reach the Marinas Islands in 1944. For his courageous service, he received 11 awards, including the Distinguished Flying Cross, the Legion of Merit award and the National Defense Service Medal.

Robert A. Mann is a former member of the United States Air Force, and enjoyed a long career in the aerospace industry. The author of five books, he lives in Pahrump, Nevada.

B-29 Combat Ops from the Group CO's Perspective!

Colonel Sam Harris was the first CO of the 499th BG, commanding it from April 1944 to March 1945. Assigned to the 73rd BW, XXI Bomber Command in the Marianas, the 499th flew bombing raids over Japan beginning in November 1944. While in command of the 499th, Harris kept a diary which serves as the basis of B-29S OVER JAPAN, A GROUP COMMANDER'S DIARY, a 2011 McFarland release.

B-29S OVER JAPAN interweaves entries from Harris' diary with historical summaries of B-29 development/deployment and 73rd BW combat ops by editor Robert Mann. Since Harri's focus was on HIS Group, Mann's inserts help provide prospective and background to the basic story.

As a Group CO, Harris flew few bombing missions against Japan. Consequently, the book really focuses on the problems and challenges Harris faced in getting the 499th established and functioning as an effective B-29 bomber group. Early B-29 ops weren't successful due to incorrect tactics and B-29 technical problems. Harris' book is especially useful in revealing the problems he and other XXI BC Group COs had with their boss, General 'Possum' Hansell, in developing the B-29 as an effective bombing platform. Hansell failed to do so and was replaced by Curtis LeMay who rewrote the book on B-29 combat ops.

If you're looking for lots of 'yank-and-bank war stories,' B-29S OVER JAPAN isn't your cup of tea. Rather it's an interesting and informative inside look at how a bomber group wages war, viewed from the CO's perspective. Recommended.

As usual with McFarland titles, Harris' book is overpriced. A 260-page oversized paperback, it sells for $37.00!

Recommended piece of history for BG on Saipan

This book both held my interest as a historical account by using diaries of Colonel Harris and other air corps statistical information, as well as provided to me a bit of a the personal story of one man's view as it follows through the days of Colonel Harris' time in the Marianas. The book has a lot of references to the missions, planes and some personnel that flew out of Isley field, of which I'm very interested. It helped fill in a few blanks for me as having a family member that flew with a different bomb group; that family member being stationed on Saipan with a different BQ at the same time as Colonel Harris. I would highly recommended this book to anyone that wants to put the timeline or chronology of the various bomb groups together a bit better - there are many valuable notations and a good amount of detailed data included. Of course Colonel Harris BG is more in-depthly highlighted and noted, but the books makes reference to other groups and planes that flew the bomb runs from Saipan in 1944-45 as well. It's both a nice personal account of the days and missions, and a good reference text for those looking for related 'data'.

this book is for a specific reader

a pretty good read from the point of view of a commander. my father flew on a B-29 and it was neat to see his plane mentioned. If i didn't have that connection to this book it would not have gotten 4 stars. This book is not an easy read. Much of it is simply records of planes coming and going. and being lost. sometimes there is details, sometimes not. Also seems that part of the diary were not legible or were damaged. That being said it is a very unique record. Note it is also quite expensive for a kindle book with it's limitations of blurry and hard to read pictures/maps.
