This book put me on the correct path to a job I love.
By Robin
I have an older version of this book. I'd like to take a look at the current version and plan to do so soon. I'm interested in taking another look because I have a friend who's interested in a new career and I thought this series might help him.

This particular book was the one that put me on the path to my career in publishing. I was lost, in and out of college, switching majors every semester, until I had to settle on one or drop out. So, I dropped out and got a "pass-the-time" job. While I was thinking about returning to school, I was browsing in a bookstore one day. Somehow, I found the career/reference section, and found this book, which seemed to be written just for me! I am a bookworm! It brightened my day. It wasn't so in-depth, but perfect for someone who might need to explore several possibilities when they are a lost soul. It let me a most important thing: most careers for bookworms start with an English degree. There I was, found. You may think that's common sense, but not all of us are common-sensical. Secondly, even working in a bookstore can get you places, if you want to move on. I got a job at a bookstore, I knew someone there with an internship at a publisher, she suggested I apply for an internship there, and I did. I now work there! Never underestimate the power of the book. Even one that looks like a quick read.

Many wonderful career ideas for bookworms
By Patrice Fagnant-macarthur
As a dedicated bookworm, how could I resist checking this book out? Authors Marjorie Eberts and Margaret Gisler provide an astounding number of careers that might appeal to those who love to read, from the expected, such as a librarian or book reviewer, to ones people might not ever have considered, such as becoming an indexer or doing government research. They also include interviews with various individuals about how they got their jobs and how they find them interesting. If you are a bookworm, there is certain to be a job (most likely more than one!) in here that will appeal to you! It would be a great book to give to a young person who loves to read, but is unsure what to do with his or her life.

Meh - useful but not earth-shattering
By N. Johnson
This book was pretty good, gives you a good idea of what it's like to work in literary careers such as publishing, what education/experience is necessary to get your foot in the door, and what the path up the ladder can be like. However, it didn't deliver any non-obvious suggestions for potential career paths. I did not have any "WOW, I never thought of being a ---" moments.

Agreed - Not a good undergrad textbook
By Ray Meiers
Unfortunately, I have to rate this book one star. It is clear the authors are brilliant experts on signals and systems. Communicating their knowledge to the rest of us is not their strong suit. Some issues I have had with this book:

First, the sample problems done in the book are barely explained. I have one BS and have worked in engineering for over ten years. I understand how to work through problems. However, the sample problems in this book are almost incomprehensible.

The second problem is a product of the first - the amount of errors in this book. If the authors had actually worked through every problem, within the book, they would have caught the errors. I was able to acquire a copy of the solutions manual and working with my professor have caught several errors already in the first chapter. Errors are not only frustrating, they undermine confidence in the book - how can I be sure that spending an hour working one problem to the "right" answer is worth it when the answer provided has relatively good chance of being wrong?

The third problem is new theories are introduced in solutions. For example, the books does a poor job of explaining the categories of systems - linear, time invariant, etc. When end-of-chapter problems on system classification are attempted, the solutions manual provides answers that incorporate theories never raised in the text. Problem 1.76 is typical. Only 1 "H" is shown, but the answer defines H1 and H2 and H3. The effects H3 explain "[t]he constant level appearing at the back end of the output, from t = 2 to t = 3, may be explained by the presence of a strong device connected in parallel with the integrator. On this basis, H3 is time-invariant." There is no discussion in the chapter of "strong devices connected in parallel" on how the those devices affect the appearance of signal output.

I want to note that I am currently halfway through chapter 2. Maybe it gets better. I will update this post if it does. If it doesn't, I am in for a very long semester!

I have been told by the publisher a new version is coming out in 2012. Too late for me.

NOT An Introductory Class Textbook
By Tim Cardenuto
I was very excited about taking the class Introduction To Signal Processing and even started reading the first chapter in this book before the class began. Unfortunately my goal of actually reading this book throughout the semester died exponentially fast as I realized the text was completely useless for the average student who didn't have 10 extra hours a week to carefully interpret what the author was trying to explain. I'm an ECE student, our program works us very hard, and no one has anything good to say about this book other than it attempts to cover the necessary material. Textbooks on introductory material should explain material in a way that makes it EASIER for students to understand, not more confusing. I refuse to believe that this is the best book for teaching Signal Processing and I am pleading with professors - do not make your students use this book!!!!!! Students - you would be better of using Google, read the reviews for the other version of this book by the same author.

A tough book for a maddeningly tough subject.
By Bob Dobbs
Signals and Systems is just plain hard. Especially convolution. This book isn't much help, unfortunately!

Quality of examples varies considerably. Some are quite illuminating; others so opaque as to be useless. You'll find yourself turning to a solution manual more often than not (if you can locate one). As noted in other reviews, there is a tendency for the homework problems to introduce new concepts without really explaining them. Not helpful.

What this book really needs is an introductory-level companion to itself. That would be what universities should actually use for an undergraduate-level Signals and Systems course.

I never did bother with the "interactive solutions" part (aka "JustAsk"). I absolutely detest one-time-use "passwords" and other such blatant attempts to kill the used book market. If I hadn't been forced to buy this book because it was assigned for the class, I wouldn't have.

This gets as many as two stars because, sadly, there isn't anything a whole lot better in its genre, as far as I know, and there is *some* amount of helpful explanation (albeit seemingly at random).

Displacement and Dispossession in the Modern Middle East (The Contemporary Middle East), by Dawn Chatty

Dispossession and forced migration in the Middle East remain even today significant elements of contemporary life in the region. Dawn Chatty's book traces the history of those who, as a reconstructed Middle East emerged at the beginning of the twentieth century, found themselves cut off from their homelands, refugees in a new world, with borders created out of the ashes of war and the fall of the Ottoman Empire. As an anthropologist, the author is particularly sensitive to individual experience and how these experiences have impacted on society as a whole from the political, social, and environmental perspectives. Through personal stories and interviews within different communities, she shows how some minorities, such as the Armenian and Circassian communities, have succeeded in integrating and creating new identities, whereas others, such as the Palestinians and the Kurds, have been left homeless within impermanent landscapes. The book is unusual in combining an ethnographic approach that analyzes the everyday experiences of refugees and migrants against the backdrop of the broad sweep of Mediterranean history. It is intended as an introduction for students in Middle East studies, history, political science, and anthropology and for anyone concerned with war and conflict in the region.

Review
'Dawn Chatty brings to this study a detailed knowledge of the Chechen, Circassian, Armenian, Palestinian and Kurdish peoples, displaced into and within the early modern/modern Middle East. Her approach highlights interaction between European and Middle Eastern history (usually taught separately), the relative openness of the Ottoman Empire to ethnic and religious diversity, and the socio-cultural capacity of migrants to build new communities in unfamiliar places. This is a book I would definitely use for classes on nationalism, forced migration and refugeedom as factors in the making of the modern Middle East.' Rosemary Sayigh, Independent Scholar

'Chatty's book is an invaluable contribution.' Erik Mohns, Anthropos

About the Author
Dawn Chatty is a social anthropologist with long experience in the Middle East. Displacement and Dispossession in the Modern Middle East is her most recent book. Previously she edited the thirty-six chapter Nomadic Societies in the Middle East and North Africa: Facing the 21st Century (2006). She is University Reader in Anthropology and Forced Migration at the Refugee Studies Centre in the Department of International Development, University of Oxford.

Decent book; poor Kindle version
By Amazon Customer
The content of the book is pretty good. It's actually more about improvising theory than "exercises" as such, although they can be used as exercises. More of a quibble, that doesn't detract from the value of the content. These will probably improve your playing if you work at them. The part about modes and scales is actually quite good.

The problem is that the Kindle version is one of the worst things I've seen. The music examples are incredibly tiny and can't be enlarged. They are so small that some of the lines on the staffs disappear. The little notations for fingers and shifts are illegible. Seriously? That's some of the most important information for figuring out the intent of the exercises.

Secondly, for almost the same price as the bound book, the Kindle version lacks any kind of audio. No CD (which is included in the price of the bound book). No MP3s or any other audio files.

Many of the language books in Kindle versions come with audio files, so we know it can be done.

Bottom line, the bound version is probably worthwhile, but avoid the Kindle version like the plague. It is totally useless.

I'm giving it two stars because I made the mistake of buying the Kindle version. Maybe more stars if I had had the bound version.

What to Practice When I'm Practicing
By hadley
I've been playing bass for a long time, and one of the things I always struggle with is what to do when I'm practicing. I have a few exercises that I can recall from various teachers, but playing the same things over and over again can only help me progress to a certain point.

I like Patrick Pfeiffer's other books and his approach to teaching bass, so I picked up this book specifically because I wanted some exercises to practice on my own. I was pleasantly surprised to see the hand and shoulder stretches, and I love the modal content. Patrick combines the technical and musical aspects of playing bass into single exercises, which makes practicing much more enjoyable and helps you progress much more rapidly as a bassist. For each exercise, there is an easy-to-follow musical notation and tab, and for most (I think all) of the exercises past the third chapter or so, there is a track of Patrick playing the exercise in question on the accompanying CD. It's easy to figure out how to play each exercise and then use a metronome to play it at the appropriate speed.

At the end of the book, Patrick lays out the ten essential elements of a good practice, which is exactly what I need. He sets out to provide the groundwork for a challenging practice session, but leaves it up to you to choose the specific exercises. I think this is a wonderful book for any bass player that is looking for practice tips that will help hone all aspects of his/her bass playing.

A Mother of excercise books
By Leonid Tomilchik
This is an excellent exercise book that will help you become a better all-around bassist. Patrick Pfeiffer knows how to break down elements of playing - scales, chords, groove - and he tells you how to structure your practice routine to address each element, and then combine them in a meaningful way. Go straight to Chapter 14 - it has a blueprint for your daily exercise routine right there! Before I started taking lessons with Patrick I was literally spinning wheels - not really knowing what and how to practice to get better. The lessons - and this book, which very closely follows what Patrick teaches - made this easy. Starting with proper warm-up for both hands separately, through "light-touch" techniques and economical playing (no unnecessary hand movements!), through knowledge of scales, modes and arpeggios, through proper groove and rhythm, through different styles - to actual music-making. All in one practice session! This is very rewarding, I must tell you. Now with this book I no longer have a feel that I just spent an hour-and-a-half playing F major scale up and down at different speed - exercise became so much more productive.
Great job, Mr. Pfeiffer! Waiting for the next excellent book!

Excellent as a broadly scoped reference book
By J. F. Woods
This book is tremendously broad in its coverage of planning topics, though not in depth. Most topics get only 2 pages, though some get 4-5. References are listed for each topic to help you find more detailed information. The book is well organized and indexed. It's loaded with illustrations such as graphs, diagrams, flow charts, line art, photographs, and maps. Most are black and white, but there are 16 color plates that are grouped together and stuck in a seemingly arbitrary position in the middle of an unrelated topic.

Some information is already out of date. For example, on page 580 it says that the Transportation Equity Act for the 21st Century (TEA-21) expired in 2003 and Congress was still debating reauthorization. The new act (SAFETEA-LU) was enacted in August 2005 and is not mentioned.

My only real complaint is that the type is quite small and can be difficult to read for 40+ year-old readers. On the other hand, I understand that if they used larger type this huge, heavy book would be even bigger and heavier.

I also got the electronic, online version of the book and was disappointed in that, again because of the small type. Even using a 20" monitor I had a very hard time reading it. The viewer application that Amazon uses has very limited capability to zoom in on the text so it does not help.

Reluctant Capitalists: Bookselling and the Culture of Consumption, by Laura J. Miller

Over the past half-century, bookselling, like many retail industries, has evolved from an arena dominated by independent bookstores to one in which chain stores have significant market share. And as in other areas of retail, this transformation has often been a less-than-smooth process. This has been especially pronounced in bookselling, argues Laura J. Miller, because more than most other consumer goods, books are the focus of passionate debate. What drives that debate? And why do so many people believe that bookselling should be immune to questions of profit?

In Reluctant Capitalists, Miller looks at a century of book retailing, demonstrating that the independent/chain dynamic is not entirely new. It began one hundred years ago when department stores began selling books, continued through the 1960s with the emergence of national chain stores, and exploded with the formation of “superstores” in the 1990s. The advent of the Internet has further spurred tremendous changes in how booksellers approach their business. All of these changes have met resistance from book professionals and readers who believe that the book business should somehow be “above” market forces and instead embrace more noble priorities.

Miller uses interviews with bookstore customers and members of the book industry to explain why books evoke such distinct and heated reactions. She reveals why customers have such fierce loyalty to certain bookstores and why they identify so strongly with different types of books. In the process, she also teases out the meanings of retailing and consumption in American culture at large, underscoring her point that any type of consumer behavior is inevitably political, with consequences for communities as well as commercial institutions.

From Publishers Weekly
Though independent booksellers may believe they already understand all that there is to know about maintaining the delicate balance between economic success and cultural integrity, those who dip into Miller's impressive examination will find their curiosity well rewarded. Miller's historical analysis reveals, for example, how independent booksellers' opposition to mass market competitors has shifted dramatically. Nearly a century ago, when department stores and five-and-dimes began selling books, the owners of established bookstores insisted that large commercial enterprises couldn't guide customers to suitably uplifting reading material. As the cultural elitism behind this argument became unpalatable, the indies changed their tune, claiming that superstores were laying down homogenized inventories that stifled intellectual diversity. Miller also discusses the internal pressures that led the American Booksellers Association to adopt a more activist stance toward the chains in recent years. One of the book's few disappointments is a closing chapter on consumption as political choice, which never quite explains how such choices operate. But that's a rare ambiguity in this otherwise carefully articulated investigation. (Apr.)Look for PW's upcoming q&a with Laura J. Miller.

Review
“From beginning to end, this book is a pleasure to read. Reluctant Capitalists is the first good history of American bookselling to appear in a very long time. Here, Laura Miller provides a fascinating analysis of conflicts within the book industry between the understanding of bookselling as a capitalist venture, and an almost diametrically opposed view of the same venture as something higher and worthier by virtue of books’ content and place within our culture.”--Elizabeth Long, author of Book Clubs: Women and the Uses of Reading in Everyday Life

(Elizabeth Long 2005-12-19)

“Laura Miller’s Reluctant Capitalists is a compelling account of the complex world of bookselling, focusing on the persistent dynamic between the book as a commodity and as a form of expression antithetical to market principles. Miller discovers that today’s conflicts between independents, chains and Big Box stores have historical precedents, and how despite repeated episodes of consolidation and price-cutting, readers and sellers remain passionate about the book’s extra-commercial status. In addition to producing a top-rate study of  bookselling, Miller has provided a fascinating framework for thinking about consumer culture more generally, by highlighting the ever-present tensions between commodification and singularity, sentiment and consumer rationality, emotion and economics.”--Juliet B. Schor, author of Born to Buy: The Commercialized Child and the New Consumer Culture

  (Juliet Schor 2005-12-19)

“This detailed account of the bookselling industry makes clear how difficult it is to maintain a moral boundary between local commerce and the rampant commercialism of retail websites and chains. Laura Miller shows that with books, as with every other commodity, the culture of consumption is shaped more by marketing strategies than by Americans’ desire to read.”--Sharon Zukin, author of Point of Purchase: How Shopping Changed American Culture

(Sharon Zukin 2005-12-19)

"Books are different. Commodities, to be sure. Bought and sold, no doubt. Yet in the world of commerce, books retain a certain mystique.

That regard has held true, traditionally, for booksellers as well, notes Laura J. Miller, a Brandeis University sociologist. In Reluctant Capitalists: Bookselling and the Culture of Consumption, she uses the bookstore wars between independents and big chains to explore the ambivalence toward business values in the world of books and wider concerns about consumption and highly 'rationalized' systems of retailing.

Traditional booksellers felt stressed long before the first of the 'superstores.' From the end of the 19th century to the 1960s, Ms. Miller writes, department stores took a heavy chunk of bookstore sales. Five-and-dimes and similar outlets also joined in, putting pressure on bookshops and making one commentator in 1954 fume that booksellers 'must now compete with everything from delicatessens to whore houses.'

A major jolt would come with the expansion of chain stores in the 1970s and 80s. Early on, writes Ms. Miller, chain bookstores tended to be small sites in mall locations with a focus on popular titles. Their discounts, previously rare in bookshops, threatened independents, but they had little in the way of selection. With superstores, things changed. The first superstores, opened by Crown Books in 1990, seem modest by later standards: 6,000 to 8,000 square feet, with 30,000 to 40,000 titles. By 2002 Borders stores carried 62,000 to 209,000 titles. Tracing the chains' growth, Ms. Miller shows how they centralized and standardized selection, ordering, and other procedures while attracting a new public previously intimidated by bookstores.

Among her topics are the standardized design of superstores, with their mix of gentility and flash and their tactics of display. Just as in supermarkets, prime positions are for sale. Publishers with big marketing budgets, she says, can purchase good real estate for their titles, such as on the end of a row of shelves facing the aisle. While some books are promoted, others, especially those more esoteric or from smaller presses, may end up as 'wallpaper,' there to create ambience but not pushed to sell.

Ms. Miller describes how independent booksellers, still feeling a mission along with the pinch, have fought back by transforming the American Booksellers Association into a champion for independents, pursuing lawsuits against trade practices they claim favor the big chains, and seeking support from an often fickle reading public."

(Nina C. Ayoub Chronicle of Higher Education 2006-05-12)

"Though independent booksellers may believe they already understand all that there is to know about maintaining the delicate balance between economic success and cultural integrity, those who dip into Miller's impressive examination will find their curiosity well rewarded. This . . . [is a] carefully articulated investigation." (Publishers Weekly 2006-02-20)

"Chain superstores, notes Laura J. Miller's fascinating new study Reluctant Capitalists: Bookselling and the Culture of Consumption, are the latest manifestation of a centuries-old struggle between bookselling Davids and Goliaths—a battle over where Americans actually shop versus stores with, Miller tartly notes, 'a style of retailing that Americans at least profess to miss.'" (Paul Collins Voice Literary Supplement 2006-05-23)

“[Miller] wishes to make the bookstore into a political arena. By patronizing the indies, consumers can protest excess commercialization and the proliferation of chains. It is one small way of striking back.”

(Tyler Cowen Slate.com)

“Laura Miller sees what has happened since the 1960s as a long 'book war,' with implications that extend far beyond the book trade. Books are a particularly illustrative commodity. . . . They cut through to the central issues of modern capitalism. How 'reluctant' should retailers be in their surrender to the profit motive? What kind of retailing should consumers, by their purchasing practices, encourage?”

(London Review of Books)

"A diligent and fascinating account of important new developments in the distribution and retailing of trade books in the United States. Anyone with an interest in the study of books, business and book historians both, will find much of interest in here." (Michael Winship Business History Review)

"What emerges from Miller's nuanced and exceptionally well-documentd survey of the book wars is an exemplary piece of scholarship and a model for how to undertake a sociology of the contemporary book world. . . . A fascinating and complex meditation on the broader politics of cultural consumption and the collective ethical implications of individual acts of consumer choice." From the Inside Flap
Over the past half-century, bookselling, like many retail industries, has evolved from an arena dominated by small independent shops to one in which chain stores have significant market share. And as other retail fields, this transformation has often been a less-than-smooth process. But this has been especially pronounced in bookselling, argues Laura J. Miller, because more than most other consumer goods, books are the focus of passionate debate about commercialism. What drives that debate? And why do so many people believe that bookselling should be immune to questions of profit?

In Reluctant Capitalists, Miller looks at a century of book retailing, demonstrating that the independent-chain dynamic is not entirely new. It began a hundred years ago when department stores began selling books, continued through the 1960s with the emergence of national chain stores, and exploded with the formation of “superstores” in the 1990s. The advent of the Internet has further spurred tremendous changes in how booksellers approach their business. All of these changes have met resistance from book professionals and readers who believe that the book business should not be captive to market forces, but should also embrace more noble priorities.

Miller uses historical data and interviews with bookstore customers and members of the book industry to explain why books evoke such distinct and heated reactions. She reveals why customers seek out certain bookstores and why book professionals identify so strongly with different types of books. In the process, she also teases out the meanings of retailing and consumption in American culture at large, underscoring her point that consumer behavior is inevitably political, with consequences for communities as well as commercial institutions.

A very interesting view
By Michael Brook
The author looks a bookselling and especially book buying from a very sophisticated standpoint taking many economic, social, and cultural factors into account. The idea that the book both is and isn't a commodity like any other is examined up down and sideways. One interesting point: the rise of giants Borders and Barnes and Noble has made buying a book an entertainment experience (e.g., people go on dates at Borders!).

Highly recommended for booklovers concerned about the "bookstore wars"
By Larry A. Portzline
Booklovers who wouldn't usually be inclined to read something about the bookselling industry will appreciate this detailed account of the business, particularly in light of the ongoing -- and often ruinous -- competition between independent bookstores, the mega-chains, the "big box" retailers and the online giants.

Informative and thought provoking
By Jan Whitaker
A very well-done study of the book selling industry. So clever to use books as a focal point for a discussion of the complexities of buying and selling. Refreshingly free of jargon, though there are occasional traces of academic production (I intend to show in the next chapter ...). But this is minor given the generally clear-headed writing and thinking the author displays. Along with all the fascinating information about the development of book selling, as a vocation and as mere commodity pushing, she has included excellent reflections on the nature of the consumer and the consumer's choices to exhibit pure marketplace rationality vs. politically informed cultural activity.

Personally, I remain caught in the complexities of these choices: I bought this book on Amazon but feel it's critical to support independent bookstores (I do that too). I've just returned from a cross country trip and it's dreary out there in places that have no independents. Coincidentally they seem to be places that have no city centers, no architecture, no newspapers, few cultural events ..., nothing but cars and roads and big box stores.
