How to get to Carnegie ...no, that joke is way too old.

An invaluable book for all skill levels and any instrument. I only wish I had read this book before I settled into all of my bad practicing habits. Written simply and with humor, this is a terrific book that will turn your head around about practicing as it did mine. Take the drudgery out of your practice routines and make them fun and effective. If you apply the lessons served up here, you will become a better musician, guaranteed. If guitar is your instrument of choice, this book makes the perfect practical companion to the classic Zen Guitar by Phillip Suto.

Great Book!

This book was recommended on a guitar forum, so I gave it a look. I was a bit hesitant at first - with this many glowing reviews I've learned to be skeptical as many authors will plant 5 star reviews of their own book. I'm confident that's not the case here.

This is a good, easy read full of invaluable advice and tips to make your guitar practice more productive. While reading the book, I was constantly thinking to myself that these are really common-sense ideas to approach practice, yet I wasn't implementing any of this advice in my routine. My method of practicing has often been to turn the TV on and noodle away on the guitar. It was clear from the author's advice that I've been doing it wrong the whole time.

I'm the kind of the guy that doesn't believe anything anyone tells me without good reason and that's the great thing about this book. The author doesn't just say, "Do it this way," with no explanation. He says "Do it this way, and here's why..."

While there are many things to take away from this book, my biggest so far is to approach practice with a plan. Without a plan, you have no goals. And without goals, you're unlikely to achieve anything.

Now I'm confident that I can plan my practice more effectively and get a whole lot more out of it and achieve my goals.

I'm learning to play a musical instrument as an adult beginner and this book has made an extraordinary difference to the quality and effectiveness of my practice sessions. Most of what he says I knew, but knowing it and doing it are two different things. His description of the process and the nuts and bolts of learning music were revelatory.

W. Montgomery Watt wrote Muhammad at Mecca in response to his perceived need for a new look at the life of the Holy Prophet (PBUH) set in a fuller historical context. He states that part of this need arose from the broader desire of twentieth century historians to see historical events in relation to the economic, social, and political background prevalent at that particular time. The author asserts that the special feature of this biography of Muhammad is thus not that it combs available sources more minutely than others have done previously, but that it pays fuller attention to these material factors, and attempts to answer many questions that have hardly been raised in the past. When this work is juxtaposed with Watt's other work Muhammad at Medina, the two together constitute a comprehensive history of the life of Muhammad and the origins of the Islamic community. The author declares in the introduction of this work that it is first and foremost written for the historian. He warns though that there is inherently the human inclination of 'tendential shaping' by early historians to make allowances for distortions or even to make it more acceptable within the shadow of other religions such as Christianity or Judaism. Though many bibliographic sources used for this work are based on earlier primary sources, one must remember that there are no known written sources other than the Qur'an about the life of the Prophet written prior to about 150 years after his death.

A rare and objective account

Muhammed at Mecca is a remarkable volume that covers the first part of the prophet of Islam and the early days of his young nation prior to 622 CE, the year of Hijra when Muhammed left Mecca to Medina which also marks the first year of the Muslim calander. With much skill and ability to retrodict events and put them in their historical context, Watt offers this book as one of the most authentic works on the subject.

The volume is an academic work and might not appeal to all kinds of readers save for academics and those who are very interested in the subject. Watt employs the modern methodology in classifying, crediting and discrediting almost all of the primary sources of the time. Watt then objectively treats these sources and draws conclusions that a reader can rarely find in other places.

His gifted style helped a great deal in making a lengthy volume full of details entertaining for the reader and rather catchy. Those who are interested in reading about the whole story of Muhammed and his mission should also buy Watt's second volume, Mohammed at Medina, which covers his post Hijra years until his death in 632.

Too bad the book is out-of-print. Publishers should consider marketing a second edition since it would certainly deserve the attention and interest of many scholars and readers today.

The only valid biography about Muhammad and Islam is by Ibn Ishaq, whose remarkable book was censored by Ibn Hisham. The English translation is The Life of Muhammad by Guillaume, who made the fatal mistake of using the title God for Allah, and so misses the most vitally important point of Islam.
Tabari used Ishaq's original uncensored text for his History.
Read them both, with the relevant Hadith, traditional stories by Bukhari and Muslim.
Muhammad was the messenger of Allah, not God.
In Arabic, the Qur'an and Sharia, Almighty God is Ilah and Allah is ‘the god’ in English.
In Arabic and the Qur'an, God/Ilah is Al-Rahman, the Beneficent, the Most Merciful, the Most Gracious.
These years in Mecca are extremely interesting, because Muhammad invoked Ilah, Ar Rahman, as well as Allah the pagan god of Arabia. Muhammad faced the sacred place of Jerusalem while praying, in honour of Abraham. During these years most of the chapters and verses are in the name of Ilah. In his last years in Mecca he began invoking only Allah as his one god. The final invocation in the name of Ilah occurred in the first year at Yathrib [Medina] in chapter 2. From then on only the name of Allah was invoked.

I just finished this book and I loved it! When I first read Lewis's Mere Christianity 7 yrs ago I was looking for a good introductory book on the moral argument. This would have been the perfect. I ended up finding other books that are great and helped me out in getting a better grasp on the moral argument but this is the perfect next book for the person that was awakened by the argument as laid out in Mere Christianity. I'm definitely going to recommend to others.

I have only read to page 1042 so I do not yet know how it ends, but regardless, Pensky has rendered a limpid translation of Habermas's "Volkswagen Quantum Official Factory Repair Manual: 1982-1988, Gasoline and Turbo Diesel, Including Wagon and Syncro." This is one of those translations that appears to speak more profoundly than the original, and with the expanded appendix, the full color map, and the inclusion of new chapters on both "Wagons and Syncros" this text will spend more time on my nightstand than on the shelf.

While Prof. Habermas is one of the most versatile thinkers of the late twentieith century, one had no idea that his expertise went as far as Volkswagen repair.
Leave it to the computer wonks at Amazon to bring this little-known text to our attention. One wonders how it will affect Habermas scholarship:
