About the Author

Laurent Gayer is a research fellow at the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS), currently posted at the Centre de Sciences Humaines (CSH) in Delhi. He is also Research Associate at the Centre d'Etudes de l'Inde et de l'Asie du Sud in Paris. He has coedited, with Christophe Jaffrelot, Armed Militias of South Asia: Fundamentalists, Maoists, and Separatists, and Muslims in Indian Cities: Trajectories of Marginalization, both of which are available from OUP.

This painstakingly researched book by a French author, who uses his Urdu skills and personal knowledge of Karachi's teeming slums to decipher the various conflicts that beset this megalopolis, sets the Gold Standard for a portrait of Pakistan's economic heart. Each chapter reveals the multi-layered realities of Karachi. The book helps you understand the ethnic, sectarian, and economic conflicts that rage simultaneously. The picture is of a city that represents Pakistan in microcosm. If Karachi fails, Pakistan fails. If Karachi hangs together, there is hope for Pakistan. Read this with a companion gripping novel "The Prisoner" by Omar Shahid Hamid to get a flavor of life in Karachi.Gayer has taken Steve Inskeep's brilliant reportage in Instant City and given it academic heft and rigor.A must read for policymakers in Pakistan and the region, and interested citizens of Pakistan.

A serious, smooth flowing and objective analysis of conflict in Karachi. Several works of fiction and non-fiction have appeared recently on Karachi but Gayer's book tops them all. The text flows smoothly and artfully uses Urdu literature, at times, to explain conditions. Its after a while that I have enjoyed a work of non-fiction so much.

Bruce Thyer is currently a Professor and former Dean with the College of Social Work at Florida State University. Dr. Thyer spent the years 1987 - 2002 with the University of Georgia, where he earned the rank of Distinguished Research Professor. He is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and a Board Certified Behavior Analyst. In 2012 he was elected to the Social Work Academy of the National Academies of Practice. Dr. Thyer is the founder and current editor of one of social work's premier journals, RESEARCH ON SOCIAL WORK PRACTICE, and is the author of over 250 articles, 80 chapters and he had authored or edited over 25 professional books. His research interests involve the promotion of evidence-based practice, evaluation research, applied behavior analysis, and social work theory.

I bought this so that my low level high school ...

I bought this so that my low level high school students could understand their literature stories. I have other students asking to borrow it for fun---who could say no to that?

Having now read the entire collection, I am disappointed that they include only PARTS of stories, not the whole of anything. The quality is great, but they are only sound bites. There are also some boob images (that fit the story), but keep this high school age and above.

Don't be fooled. This collection does NOT include any full-fledged retellings of classic literature. It is limited to renderings of individual chapters or small portions of these great works. Again, this collection is NOT a replacement for nor shortcut to reading the actual works themselves. You would learn more about, say, the "Epic of Gilgamesh" from reading the Wikipedia entry on it.

If you are a graphic novel hipster or a fan of contemporary illustration, you'll probably love this set.

If you are trying to familiarize a a teenager or young adult with the wonders of classic literature from various cultures -- and maybe even inspire them to read the original texts -- this might be a good start. But for this price, you could buy 30 or these full classics at a used book store and stock your shelves.

Also, keep in mind some of the graphic tales in the Canon would be rated R if they were films.

A vapid re-telling of great stories

These may be excellent for children who are too young to read real literature (say, under age ten) or to appreciate real drawing (say, under age eight). But for everyone else, the only excuse for buying and filling your head with such stuff is that you are lazy and illiterate. These simplified re-tellings have none of the richness or quality of the originals. They are flat and uninspired. Unfortunately, buyers of this series have no clue what they are missing, and obviously don't care. Young children used to develop vocabularies and learn about human nature and develop more complex thought patterns by reading books such as the Iliad. Children today have more free time and access to read it, but less patience. The favorable review by a teacher shows how we have given up on education.

As for the art, crude drawings such as these-- with no appreciation for the sensitivity of line, or the qualities of design or composition-- can sometimes be potent in the pages of Raw or Zap, but are woefully out of place with subject matter like this. Illustrators such as Willy Pogany did excellent, simplified illustrations that enhanced works such as the Iliad. Even children's versions of the Iliad have been adorned with excellent illustrations, such as those by the Provensens. Compare those superior pictures with the lame illustrations in these books before you invest. These are truly chewing gum for the mind.
