I have met Mamo

I recently returned from a six month stay in Ethiopia. During my time there, I made friends with a man who, I later learned, is the basis for much of the character Mamo. His story is very compelling, and Ms. Laird did a fantastic job of re-creating it in a way that portrayed many of the emotions and events in precisely the way they were described to me by Belete. I did not read the book until my return to the States, and spent the entire time lost in my memories of Addis Ababa. Ms. Laird does a wonderful job of describing life on the streets and life in Ethiopia from the eyes of those who are there. This portrayal is _very_ accurate and the writing is very accessible to readers of many levels. I highly recommend this book!

The Garbage King

Elizabeth Laird writes realistic fiction books that focus on character development and a beautiful story line. She has traveled all over Addis Ababa (the setting of the book The Garbage King), therefore she knows about what happens there, and she incorporates it into her book. In The Garbage King, 13 year old Mamo gets tricked and sold into slave labor by a fake uncle. Meanwhile, Dani is being sent away to an army general because he got a bad test score, but he runs away first in fear of the general. Eventually, Mamo and Dani meet, and the only chance for either to survive is to trust each other with their lives. This book is a nice read for people who either want to find out about Addis Ababa, or people who simply want to read a wonderful book. I think that this is a book that hooks you in after a slow beginning. This book has taught me about the things that actually happen in Addis Ababa. I feel sorry for all the homeless people because the days are hot and the nights cold, and they don't have shelter to protect them form being beaten by the weather. This book has really opened my eyes to the rest of the world, and some of the issues in it. All in all, this is a wonderful book that will delight you until it's finished.

Elizabeth Laird, a famous fiction writer, was born in New Zealand 1943. Elizabeth Laird has written many books about issues that are happening today. The issues include slave labour, war, fighting and kidnapping. Her favourite country, Ethiopia, has lot's of issues and even today people are dying and starving. Her books have been shortlisted 3 times for the Carnegie Medal. This book takes place in Addis Ababba of Ethiopia. The story is mainly focused on a 13 year old boy that is escaping death and slave labour. The boy's name is Mamo and he is befriended by another boy, Dani. Dani is running away from his painful life of dealing with his angry father. The two meet and they don't part until they return home. Mamo and Dani both meet other people and decide to join their group.

I think this book is really good and fast-paced, I wasn't able to put it down. This book was shortlisted for the Carnegie Medal, which to most people is an honor. I would rate this book an 8 out of 10. The fluency of this book is very, very smooth and flowing. The events in this book move quickly so that the reader won't get bored reading too many details. Elizabeth Laird really knows how to write with strategic skills and her ideas flow smoothly. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes reading or to kids who who have ever considered running away. Elizabeth Laird really knows how to keep people reading.

Gypsy Holocaust

Roman Mirga and his family leave the city to return to their family clan when they discover that Gypsies are being rounded up and relocated to camps for extermination. At first the clan does not believe him but the relocation of a nearby gypsy group convinces the group to flee. As they travel to the Hungarian border, many gypsies are lost along the way. Upon reaching Hungary, they are able to spend nearly a year wandering up and down the country. However, when Germany invades Hungary, the gypsies are rounded up and sent to Auschwitz. Once in Auschwitz, Roman becomes a translator for Dr. Josef Mengele while his father plays the violin to calm the Jews as they enter the crematoriums. Moving, this is an interesting look at an often overlooked group targeted during the Holocaust.

This book is a good reference source for threads and UNIX system calls. When a novice C++ programmer and starting to delve into Solaris system calls, this book gives out a lot of the examples and explanations a reader need to develop her or his applications. It also saves her or him from creating utilities that may be not known but already in its existence. I especially like the format. It gives a simple explanation, an example of each of the major parts, an example of the code that compiled under a real world environment, and a display of the program in action.
This book helps C programmers on UNIX in advanced C++ programming techniques in the UNIX/POSIX environment, so that they will understand the advanced features of the ANSI-C language, become familiar with C library functions and the UNIX system calls, and become familiar with the ANSI-C and POSIX standards.
This book is also a good reference for UNIX. When the OOP/C++ was not as mature as now and still in progress a few years ago while the book was written, it may cover more on the Objected Oriented Programming if it were written today. I have worked for a few leading large-scale high-performance trading engine systems for stock exchanges, such as Pacific Exchange, the national third largest, NASDAQ Stock Market, the national second largest, commodities exchanges, and Internet auction engine, and global company rating search engines. I still found the part about threads in UNIX system programming a useful reference.

Though not a textbook, Gives Very Good Idea ..

I looked at lot of Unix system programming books, none of them explain how it is implemented in the system and how to use it. If someone is new to Unix Systems programming, this book gives qute a boost. It is easy to read book.

I had to change 4 jobs in past 8 years and each time this book has been a quick review of the Unix concepts & system programming.

Example: About Posix threads, I searched on internet and looked at many books including Stevens(2nd ed), but got good confidence about it after going thru the 4 pages in here than anywhere else.

Hilarious, or blasphemous?

Who'd ever guess that the "Aussie's" would ever promote their own Bible? Well now its been done, and I found it to be a very enjoyable read.

Kel Richards has done a great job putting the gospel into an Australian setting, using typical Aussie phrases. Every time I pick it up it brings a smile to my face. True, it can never be a study Bible, although the wording of some of the verses did on occasion enlighten me.

Some have expressed concern that the book is blasphemous. In my opinion, it isn't. It is a fairly accurate expression of how Jesus would speak, had he been a true-blue Aussie. Not on one occasion did it ever question His divinity or integrity. Perhaps there are hints of disrespect to certain figures, like when the prophetess Anna is called an old duck, but God or Jesus were never slighted.

If you're not an Australian, in the back of the book is a reference for particular words/phrases that will help you to understand what has been said. A very funny book!

Good Book

It's a good book and has lots of funny Australian slang in it. I like the glossary in the back because it helps define what it means so that you'll understand. I've read the whole thing twice. The only thing wrong with it is it's too short. I ordered the second book, More Aussie Bible, and I'm excited about it. I think he did a good job, including random parables, scripture, and Psalm 23.

Perfect for Aussie friends and "rellies"

The Swiss reviewer convinced me to buy this book because I liked her other reviews. I was not disappointed. It is certainly not blasphemous. It presents the story told in the four gospels faithfully. But it's fun! How can you not smile when you read about the angel Gabriel telling Mary, "You are a very special sheila, Mary. God has His eye on you." This book is a very cool way to "witness" to an Aussie or to help a new-believer Aussie get into the Word of God. The laughs it produces will never be irreverent, because the author was indeed reverent toward God. But he has some fun with Aussie-speak, and, as someone who was born an Aussie and has beloved relatives there, I was thrilled to find this book. I bought seven copies to mail to Australia!

Next, Życiński calls into question the classical opposition between the teleological and the causal interpretation of evolutionary processes. He attempts to overcome that opposition by reliance on the concepts of supervenience and an evolutionary attractor. In this way, he proposes a new approach in which teleological anthropomorphisms as well as reductionist metaphors are avoided.

The author then presents a theology of nature in which particular attention is given to the immanence of God and to Divine kenosis. Finally, the book offers a theological anthropology, including chapters on the harmonization of paleontology and theological anthropology, the limits of sociobiology, and original sin in relation to scientific knowledge of the human person.

Archbishop Zycinski exhibits a “hermeneutic of continuity” by reconciling scientific reason with faithful theology

This superb book shows how faith and reason need not be set in opposition to one another.

Science, with its discovery of evolution, positively enriches theology. The study of nature improves our knowledge of God.

Archbishop Zycinski argues that both Christian anti-evolutionism and anti-Christian scientism are each regrettable fundamentalisms. The Archbishop rejects both extremes.

Evolution is a joke that is forced on us in school.

This book was just too wordy. The topic is very easy to understand and the facts are there for anyone who wants to search for the truth. This book could do it a lot simpler than it did. I wasn't impressed.
