The "real" view from the other side

Not anymore real than the damned united but an interesting perspective of the history and future of the main charachters from the book. The writer uses interviews, sometime contradictory, to tell his perspective of the story. Informative and interesting but at times as theoretical as the original book.

This book expands on the stories of Clough at Derby and Don Revie at Leeds, tales worthy of their own books.

Even with the Leeds bias a great read. For a Leeds fan probaly something better.

Exactly what experienced home canners have been asking Ball for! Must have book for them!

There are now three books in the Ball line-up for home canners.

I would say that the following order reflects the hierarchy.

1. Ball Blue Book;
2. Ball Complete;
3. All New Ball Book of Canning (this one)

1. If you are a beginner canner, and don't have (1) yet, you need to get it. It has all the basics in a succinct fashion. And because it's the smallest book, it's the easiest to flip through to find quick reference information on canning beans and other veg perfectly. As of time of writing this review in June 2016 the most current one is: Ball Blue Book, 37th edition, 2014. (Note: there's no metric in this edition, only American volume measurements. If you want metric and weights, you need to search for the UK edition of this book, titled "Ball Blue Book® Guide - Metric Edition.")

2. As you grow in canning you will want to expand your repertoire. Then you will want to add the Ball Complete. It recaps a lot of what is in the Blue Book, and adds a lot more onto it. No photos, though, just a good old-style recipe book.Measurements are given in American and metric. The most current one, as of time of writing this review in June 2016, is:

Experienced canners, though, will eventually get bored of the above two books, and hunger for a more challenging set of canning recipes with more interesting ingredients, and a greater choice of pressure canning recipes. This book, the ALL NEW, is the book for them. Lots of ethnic recipes, lots of all new pressure canning recipes for interesting dishes, lots of interesting gourmet ingredients, and Ball has finally caught up with its Canadian sister Bernardin and let the wine flow freely in the recipes. This book goes above and beyond the added variety that home canners have been pleading for from Ball for some years now. Measurements are in American and metric. They've really done a great job here with this book. The only thing is, I'm not sure what they are going to call it when it's not "new" anymore! :}

Eventually you will want all three books. Even experienced canners just wanting to refresh their memories for processing times on a jar of plain mushrooms will always want a copy of the Ball Blue Book to hand, because its brevity is exactly what you want "in the heat of the moment." But as you grow, you may get bored of what is in the Blue Book, and when you do, you will want to get the other two Ball books.

Although I like the new recipes

Although I like the new recipes, this book is not up to Ball's quality standards. I'm a master food preserver through the University of California, so I have a fair amount of expertise (plus, over 25 years of experience in food preserving). There's some errors in describing the science behind food preservation, particularly in the pressure canning and the fermentation chapters. For instance, the environment inside a pressure canner is not a vacuum, but rather a pressurized one. This high-pressure environment allows the contents to reach 240F, which is required to destroy botulism spores. The explanation of salt brine's role in the process of fermentation is ambiguous and confusing. The brine does not 'attract' lactobacillus but rather retards the growth of spoilage bacteria, which allows the lactobacillus to out-compete the harmful bacteria. It is the lactobacillus that creates the acidic environment, not the salt. Also, acidity and anaerobicity are two distinct conditions. The book states that the acidity creates the anaerobic environment, which is simply not true.

Some of the recipes contain errors in editing. For example, in at least one salsa recipe (Salsa Roja), garlic is listed as an ingredient, and mentioned in the first step, but never mentioned again. There are several omissions like this.

I also have concerns regarding the use of fresh lime juice instead of bottled juice in some recipes. This may result in some cooperative extensions recommending against using this book. If the fresh juice is recommended as a flavoring rather than an acidifier, this should be noted as such. This is especially confusing because in other places in the book, 5% acidity bottled lemon juice is specifically mentioned.

Other than these issues, the recipes I've made so far are delicious and quite different from the usual fare. I especially like the unique flavor combinations, particularly the addition of fresh herbs, wine, and other new ingredients. I wish I could give this book 5 stars.

Not a primer, but a great addition to your canning library

Very nice book. Beautifully photographed. As an experienced canner, I don't need a basic primer to show me how to can and preserve. I would use the Ball Blue Book Guide To Preserving, 37th Edition for that. That being the case, this is a nice supplemental book covering quick refreshers of how to water bath and pressure can, fermentation, freezing and dry meats, fruits, and vegetables. What IS nice about this publication is they are now providing the user with some really good recipes you can serve your family which feature your canned and preserved products. I don't think they have done this before.

This book wasn't meant as a beginner's primer for canning at all. It is a continuation of the excellent publications Ball publishes. If you are a novice canner, this isn't the book for you. But as a compliment to your canning library, it is a nice go-to addition. I plan to make a number of the recipes it contains.

How should we read Shakespeare plays? In this clear and succinct book author David Bevington, who has extensive experience of teaching Shakespeare to students, encourages readers to approach his works aggressively, interactively, and questioningly. Bevington suggests that readers think of themselves as armchair directors, deciding what the actors should wear, what social class they represent, why they are there, and, most importantly, what they are after.

Bevington’s introduction incorporates fresh and incisive readings of a handful of popular Shakespeare plays: A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Romeo and Juliet, Henry IV Part I, Hamlet, King Lear and The Tempest. Using these plays as examples, he demonstrates how Shakespeare worked his way forward by genres, focusing at first on romantic comedies and English history plays, and taking on the daunting assignment of writing tragedies only when he felt he was ready.

About the Author
David Bevington is Professor Emeritus at the University of Chicago. His recent publications include Shakespeare: The Seven Ages of Human Experience (second edition, 2005) and Shakespeare: Script, Stage, Screen (with Anne Marie Welsh and Michael L. Greenwald, 2006). He has also edited the Bantam Shakespeare in 29 volumes (currently being reedited), The Complete Works of Shakespeare (fifth edition, 2003), and a number of individual Shakespeare plays including Antony and Cleopatra, Henry IV, Part I, and Troilus and Cressida.

A Delightful Guide to the Bard

Bevington is one of the leading editors and scholars of Shakespeare today. He brings a deep and broad knowledge to the enjoyment of Shakespeare. His aim here is simple: to make Shakespeare as enjoyable and understandable as possible to ALL readers and viewers of his plays--and he succeeds admirably. His method for reading is not really a "method" at all, but rather an inquisitive and open attitude. He writes, in regard to HAMLET,

"The best thing is to start afresh, at the beginning, with as few preconceptions as possible. Ask probing questions. Why, at every point, is the dramatist doing what he is doing? Who are the characters, and what are they saying to one another? Be especially wary of cliched interpretations, as for example that Hamlet's 'tragic flaw' lies in his morbid delaying of what his father's ghost urges him to do. Be skeptical. Does a tragedy have to have a 'tragic flaw'? Is Hamlet's delay unreasonable? What is his problem?"

In addition to a brief (and largely dispensable) introduction and conclusion, there are substantial chapters on A MIDSUMMER NIGHT'S DREAM, ROMEO AND JULIET, HENRY IV: PART ONE, HAMLET, KING LEAR, and THE TEMPEST. The chapters lead us step by step through the plays, considering key scenes in detail. His main focus is plot, character, and language, giving the novice lots of helpful information for understanding and appreciating Shakespeare's dramatic genius. There is a lot of line-by-line commentary that students will find invaluable. He discusses some of the possibilities for dramatic interpretation for actors and directors, and he advocates viewing the plays in performance or on DVD. You won't get bogged in the scholarly controversies with this book: it's squarely aimed at beginners, but even experienced Shakespeare fans and scholars will find many original tidbits here. A couple of his interpretations are pretty cheesy, such as when he claims that Falstaff is actually brave at the Gadshill robbery (Henry 4), or that the Capulets are nouveau rich social climbers.

Bevington is one of the best writers on Shakespeare for a general audience. I also highly recommend his COMPLETE SHAKESPEARE, which has marvelous introductions quite similar to the chapters in HOW TO READ . . . . For more on the historical background and criticism, I also recommend Sean McEvoy's wonderful SHAKESPEARE: THE BASICS.

If you are very familiar with the subject this book is very helpful. If not then you need the text book which is about three times the price. If your air conditioning is broken research the companies in your area and call a tech. Trying to fix it yourself could cost you thousands of dollars.

Great GNT, Including Paper

I received my Crossway Top-Grain Leather UBS Greek New Testament (GNT) Reader's Edition today and it is great.

First, I would like to address the complaint in another review that the paper is cheap and thick paper unsuitable for a GNT. While I have a few very expensive Cambridge bibles that have higher quality paper, the paper quality in this GNT is still very good. As to the thickness of the paper, the paper is a heavyweight paper for at least 2 good reason: first, this GNT is a READER'S EDITION so the thickness of the paper prevents "ghosting" where the text on the reverse side of the page can be seen trough the paper and obscure the text on the side of the page you are reading and, thus, the thickness of the paper aids in making Crossway's GNT more readable; second, I assume most people who are reading this GNT will be using it for study and making numerous notes in the GNT in pen/pencil, and the heaviness of the paper will hold up well to pen/pencil notes and help against "bleed-through" of the notes to the opposite side of the page. In short, the paper is thick/heavy - but with a purpose.

As to the font, it is large (11 point), of a medium weight or thickness, and is very readable font (as opposed to some of the other GNTs out there that, while having a large point size, use thin or "lightweight" fonts that are almost unreadable). I have somewhat aging eyes, and I have no problem reading the small "breathing marks"/accents on the Greek words in the Crossway GNT( which I usually have a hard time reading in other GNTs). I am VERY pleased with the font.

As to the binding, the top-grain cowhide is very supple (almost as soft as my calfskin bibles). The cover is neither limp or stiff. The cover is of a medium stiffness which holds up well to the heaviness of the text block but is still limp enough to be flexible and very comfortable to hold in the hand. Also, the binding is Smyth-sewn for durability of binding. In short, a very nice binding which I am happy with.

In short, it is a BIG and HEAVY GNT; but again, it is a Reader's Edition which needs to be large to be readable. The paper and font are great for reading, and those looking for a very nice, durable, quality leather bound GNT should be very happy.

Crossway Vs Zondervan...

I've been a big fan of the Zondervan Reader's New Testament ever since it was first published, and have written a couple of rave reviews of that product. However, it did have some flaws, of which the most significant was that Zondervan seemed to be unable to produce a bold, clear Greek font.

In their first edition, bizarrely, it was entirely in italics. Later versions corrected this, but produced an even harder to read font.

OK, this is supposed to be a review of the Crossway/UBS version, not the Zondervan - but the point is, it's almost as if Crossway have studied the Zondervan approach and corrected the errors.

First, and foremost, they've produced a wonderful, easy-to-read font.
They've also used heavier paper - significantly heavier - in size, this volume looks more like a full study bible than a New Testament. It's about twice the thickness of the ZOndervan, but it's worth it, because the paper adds to the clarity of each page (less text from the other side of the page is visible)

Crossway have also improved the list of less-common gloss words at the bottom of each page - in the Zondervan Bible, they're clumped into one huge paragraph, making it difficult to find the particular word you're looking for. Here, they're in two neat columns, which is much more pleasing to the eye, but also much easier to use.

Finally, a few of what I regard as the pros and cons of each version.

ZONDERVAN:
Pro - lightweight. Thin. Easily lies flat on a desk. Nice rubbery cover. VERY reasonably priced.
Con - AWFUL font. Ugly and unwieldy English gloss. Thin paper with some bleed-through from underlying pages.

CROSSWAY:
Pro - Bold, easy-to-read font. 'proper' leather cover. Bright, thick pages. Easy-to-use glosses.
Con - Too tightly bound to EVER lie flat on a desk (without major damage!). Maybe just a tad heavy & thick. HUGELY more expensive then the Zondervan version - presumably because of the real leather cover.

But for me, this is now THE readers' NT. I'll still pack my Zondervan if travelling (lighter & smaller), but for most purposes, this is the one I'll be using. Highly recommended.

PS Nov 24 2012: I've come back to update this review. I love this GNT so much that it IS also the one I take with me on trips, and while still in perfect condition it's loosened up enough that it WILL lie on a desk. So as far as I'm now concerned, there's no contest. I just don't use the ZOndervan for anything anymore.

Outstanding, except....

This Greek New Testament is outstanding in many ways:
1. The font is fantastic, making it really easy to read.
2. The footnotes/words that occur less than 30 times is much easier to read than the Zondervan Reader's Greek New Testament. There are 2 clear columns, whereas in the Zondervan RGNT they are all lumped together. The UBS Reader's GNT is vastly superior in this regard.
3. The leather is really nice and the book overall is really attractive.

There is one glaring weakness:
The UBS Reader's Greek New Testament DOESN'T LAY FLAT!! I have tried everything short of breaking the binding and this thing won't stay open on my desk. Unless, of course, you have it opened to the very middle of the book. It is a little frustrating that I have to put something heavy on it just to keep it open. I have had this for a few months now and it has not improved.

Overall, I think this is the nicest Reader's Greek New Testament, and you will probably really like it, so long as you don't mind that the binding is so tight that it will not lay flat.
