A guilty pleasure--heavy on the pleasure

It's the literary equivalent of a summer night, a good friend and a gin-and-tonic: Shannon is a deft writer; a natural storyteller with a wicked turn of phrase and frighteningly specific memory (David Schwimmer's acting class antics are hilarious!). As someone who was also a young adult in the '80s and '90s, I felt like I was visiting the parallel universe I'd only wondered about: What happens when you have a brain AND big hair--when you want to be An Actor but everyone wants you in Spandex? My favorite parts, though, are when Shannon reveals--without a drop of sentiment--the deep pain and losses in her childhood that drive her into wanting to be Somebody. Well worth reading!

If you grew up in the 80s or 90s, you will find much to love here.

Ms. Bradley-Colleary's (partial) memoir is really a fun read. She is a good writer, to start. Her prose is colorful, varied, and interesting - that's my first criterion in a book, and she passes the test mightily. I really feel like we are getting the truth here - unvarnished, about what it is like to start out as an actor in LA and actually achieve some success. But even more interesting are the trappings of that - the scenes that she finds herself in, both with celebrities and without.

But I admit even more pleasurable for me is the, pardon the cliche, walk down memory lane. Ms. Bradley-Colleary has painted a picture of the 80s and 90s that will be extraordinarily familiar to anyone who came of age in that time period. From Roman Polanski to INXS to David Schwimmer to you-name-it, who doesn't love reading about all of these things that so occupied us before we "grew up", had kids, and had to be responsible. Thank you, Ms. Bradley-Colleary, for a fun jaunty time/travelogue of what made those decades so great (and perhaps in some ways not so great).

It is a fun read and well worth the money. I am looking forward to more from her.

Shannon Bradley-Colleary is funny as hell

Let me begin by saying - as I have in a few other reviews - that I don't care for Amazon's star-rating system. I more than "liked" this book, but I have a personal policy of saving 5 stars for books that were life-changing, so let's call it 4 1/2 stars for Smash, Crash and Burn. Shannon Bradley-Colleary is funny as hell, and she has STORIES. As a child of the 80's who stumbled into adulthood in the 90's, I absolutely loved reading her memories of icons of the era like David Schwimmer and INXS. Her poignant recollection of her relationship with the late Brandon Lee is especially touching - and haunting. But what I found most compelling was to consider this aspiring actor in the context of her life history. She clearly - and deftly - uses humor to deal with extreme hurt, and her perseverance in the face of disappointment is admirable. What does it mean to be a perceptively-thinking, deeply feeling young woman in a business that seeks to reduce you to your dress size? Shannon Bradley-Colleary invites the reader behind the scenes, and will have you laughing until you cry - and sometimes just pausing to consider the strange directions in which our dreams can take us, and the places we may find true success.

Mostly set in the 200th year of the Emperor's Great Crusade. On Caliban civil war erupts. Many strive to break from Imperial rule. Brother-Librarian Zahariel and his men, under orders from El'Jonson's second-in-command (Luther), fight almost nonstop. An evil taint seems to suffuse parts of the planet itself. Roots and vines seethe with corruption of an awful, otherworldly sentience.

Meanwhile in the stars, Lion El'Jonson believes that Warmaster Horus will attempt to take the fully-operational forge within the Tanagra system. He sends a small, hand-picked force to the keep the wealth of Diamat out of Horus's hands. Brother-Redemptor Nemiel (cousin of Zahariel) and Brother-Sergeant Kohl lead this force. However, El'Jonson knows of another reason the Warmaster is interested in Diamat.

***** FOUR AND A HALF STARS! This is the sequel to book six, Descent of Angels. Unless you read it first, you may find yourself lost in this story. Events basically pick up where Descent of Angels left off. (Zahariel and Luther land on Caliban after El'Jonson sent them away.) The author had to show what was happening on Caliban, as well as in the Crusade, and he did an admirable job of it! Zahariel and Nemiel are cousins. Zahariel is on Caliban with Luther. Nemiel is with El'Jonson in space. I found it very interesting to see how the author juggled the two similar men and how the battles end up shaping each.

This well crafted story will keep your attention and perhaps give you a few surprises as well. *****

Loved it!!!

This is an excellent read and a worthy addition to the series. I had the good fortune of reading "Decent of Angels" right before I read this. It is an excellent and rich story with obvious plot points to be continued in the future. This part leaves you wanting that third book now. I have completed books 1-6, and 11 in this series, all in the last three weeks. This is an excellent series and this chapter of the story was highly enjoyable. I would definately suggest you read this novel after "Decent", while it takes place 50 years after the events in "Decent", the characters are the same. I think it just added to the richness of the entire story for me without having to reintroduce myself to the characters.

Perfect development of the divergent directions of the Dark Angels

This story neatly wraps up all loose ends from Descent of Angels while developing the plot lines hinted or laid there; all the while staying true to the established lore of the 40K Dark Angels. The growing distance between the Lion and Caliban can bee seen; the conflicts raging inside Luther are also developed. It is perhaps Luther's story and growth (or the opposite?) that is most compelling. Luther is a very sympathetic character. You can see him going bad, kinda of don't blame his bitterness, feel sorry he's being trapped by that bitterness by Chaos, and identify with him. However, you also know the outcome and you wish he would turn back at any moment. The book tells the full tale of Luther's fall from grace and sets the stage for the Fall of Caliban. It also sets up how different the legion crusading with the Lion is verses the Legion on Caliban. The die is cast for the Fallen vs the Dark Angels.

Robert Steven Kaplan is president and chief executive of the Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas. An excellent book for anyone striving to be a great leader.

This is another great book on leadership by Robert Kaplan. His previous books have been extremely helpful to me personally and professionally and this one takes the challenge of "how to be a great leader" to the next level. In particular, I find the format and in depth listing of specific steps very useful. As the leader of a company, I am always looking for effective ways to lead and improve the communication I have with my employees. What You Really Need to Lead, highlights the necessary tools I need to follow as I mentor other leaders and department heads that report to me. I think anyone striving to be a great leader will want to add this book to their library.

Affirming the strength of the human spirit

When I purchased this book, I did so with the intention of reading it to use as a tool with my clients. The clients who have found this book to be the most helpful are those who have completed their initial trauma work and are asking themselves and me, as their therapist, "Where do I go from here?" The book has some very powerful exercises which provide an affirmation as to how far they have progressed in their healing journey from abuse and offers direction as to where they can go from here.
I would also recommend this book to anyone who wants to take the time to explore how they have grown as an individual. The book is very thought provoking and makes you stop and consider the hidden, sources of joy and beauty that already exist in your life.

Hands-on and helpful

Yvonne Dolan's book did not promise what it couldn't deliver. The activities were hands-on and the rationale that prefaced each of the activities/therapeutic exercises provided encouragement without talking down to the reader. Also, the rationale gave the needed insight into the purpose of doing the activities.

I liked that, from the start, she was adamant about changing one's outlook on life from survivor to someone who thrives! What a great change of perspective, from drudgery to delight. I caught myself giving some of my students the pep talk (don't survive, thrive!).

Virtually every advance in thin film, energy, medical, tribological materials technologies has resulted from surface engineering and engineered materials. Surface engineering involves structures and compositions not found naturally in solids and is used to modify the surface properties of solids and involves application of thin film coatings, surface functionalization and activation, and plasma treatment. Engineered materials are the future of thin film technology. Engineered structures such as superlattices, nanolaminates, nanotubes, nanocomposites, smart materials, photonic bandgap materials, metamaterials, molecularly doped polymers and structured materials all have the capacity to expand and increase the functionality of thin films and coatings used in a variety of applications and provide new applications. New advanced deposition processes and hybrid processes are being used and developed to deposit advanced thin film materials and structures not possible with conventional techniques a decade ago. About the Author
Peter Martin worked at Battelle, Pacific Northwest Laboratory (BNW) for over 29 years where he currently holds an Emeritus Laboratory Fellow appointment, and specializes in developing thin film coatings for energy, biomedical, space and defense applications. He pioneered the use of reactive magnetron sputtering technology to fabricate novel and advanced optical coating materials and specializes in large area optical and thin film coating development. He has also led development of high performance large area ground-based and space-based laser mirrors for DOD applications.
Dr. Martin has written over 400 technical publications. He has won three R&D 100 Awards for his work in microfabrication and barrier coatings for flat panel displays, has two FLC awards, was awarded Battelle Technology of the Year (2003) for his work with the photolytic artificial lung, and voted Distinguished Inventor and PNNL 2005 Inventor of the Year. He has 26 US patents and numerous foreign and pending patents. He also teaches short courses on smart materials and energy materials and applications.

The best survey of surface engineering available

Introduction to Surface Engineering and Functionally Engineered Materials (Wiley-Scrivener) is a brilliant book!

Peter Martin takes a very nuanced and complex area and structures the material in an easy to understand and interesting way.

Dr. Martin begins with a brief overview of the various kinds of surfaces, e.g., tribology, optical, electrical, etc. and then goes on to describe the 12 most commonly used techniques for applying the surfacing materials.

He then spends a chapter on each of the surface functional areas with extensive notes on the properties available for each type of surface agent using the applicable surface application techniques.

One of the highlights of the book for me was the incredible bibliography.

I can imagine applications for this in the university classroom or for the practicing engineer (I'm in the latter camp).

If you only buy one book on surface engineering then this is the must buy book for you!

Excellent introductory textbook

While this book provides an excellent overview of surface engineering, it is more of a textbook than a resource for professionals, albeit a very good textbook. Its structured in a manner that makes it ideal for a course and covers a wide variety of topics without getting too in depth into any single area. That said, the book does provide a thorough and informative explanation on its own of the areas covered and does not require supplemental material. The book is highly technical without going completely overboard and compares favorably to many of the undergrad materials science textbooks I remember from school.

For product designers, engineers, scientists

This book is great for a wide audience. In addition to explaining the latest advances in surface material technology, it explains fundamental concepts such as surface friction and corrosion etc. Although some other reviewers said there is a lot of math, I don't think so. The occasional sprinkle of math is not too difficult to follow, it's about the level of a beginner to intermediate college physics course. The chemistry is quite interesting as well. This is a fun book to read even if you're just curious to get up-to-date on the wide variety of surface techniques.

About the Author
Gordon M. Wardlaw, Ph.D., has taught introductory nutrition courses to students in the Department of Human Nutrition at The Ohio State University, and at other colleges and universities. Dr. Wardlaw is the author of many articles that have appeared in prominent nutrition, biology, physiology, and biochemistry journals and was the 1985 recipient of the American Dietetic Association’s Mary P. Huddleson Award. Dr. Wardlaw is a member of the American Society for Nutritional Sciences and is certified as a Specialist in Human Nutrition by the American Board of Nutrition. Dr. Wardlaw is currently retired from academia.

ANNE M. SMITH, Ph.D., R.D., L.D., is an associate professor at The Ohio State University. She was the recipient of the 1995 Outstanding Teacher Award from the College of Human Ecology, the 2008 Outstanding Dietetic Educator Award from the Ohio Dietetic Association, the 2006 Outstanding Faculty Member Award from the Department of Human Nutrition, and the 2011 Distinguished Service Award from the College of Education and Human Ecology for her commitment to undergraduate education in nutrition. Dr. Smith’s research in the area of vitamin and mineral metabolism has appeared in prominent nutrition journals, and she was awarded the 1996 Research Award from the Ohio Agricultural Research and Development Center. She is a member of the American Society for Nutrition and the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.

I rented this book for a nutrition class. The book arrived in good condition and contained a lot of helpful information. Some of the guidelines are a little out of date, but overall the information is correct.

Kurt Vonnegut (1922-2007) es uno de los escritores más amados del siglo XX.
