Wonderful Book!

Any book that espouses positivity gets an A+ in my book!

To give you an idea of what you will be getting in this book, there are chapters on "Can't Buy Me Happiness", "You>Happy", "Thoughts of Happiness", "Words of Happiness", "Actions of Happiness", "Habits of Happiness", etc. Get the picture? Each chapter goes into depth about positive changes you can make to be more happy. You will learn to align your thoughts, words and actions so they create the habits, character and destiny of happiness, according to the book description, and that description is entirely right-on.

I really like the advice and instruction this book offers. If you are tired of your negative, unhappy outlook, this book can really be helpful. Highly recommended.

Delightful "Happiness" Book

I've read several books on happiness, and this one is just delightful! Weaving personal stories, international culture, and do-able suggestions together, Will Bowen constructs an upbeat and engaging experience for the reader.

The thing I like best about "Happy This Year" is that the approach is so practical. The book presents down-to-earth, effective ways to (well, let's face it) change one's thinking habits and belief in oneself. Because, basically, that's what it takes to feel lasting happiness.

I did most of the work Bowen suggests, and raised my happiness "set-point" to a level I never knew existed. Even though I recently encountered some difficult life challenges, I've realized that my happiness level returns to its new high set-point as long as I keep practicing what I learned from this book.

A little more specific than your average happiness book

Oh, I've read the "happy" books before, full of lots of positivity and vague advice on improving that most perky of human qualities. Granted, they all have something to offer, especially if one goes in with a willingness to learn.

But "Happy This Year" was one that stood out to me. Was it full of positivity? Yes. But what impressed me was just how specific Bowen was in dispersing his advice. This was more than what happiness is and is not (though that is included). This was full of specific tips and activities to help develop habits conducive to happiness.

So the cherry on top is what so many of the other happiness books have: exuberant writing and feel-good thoughts. All very nice, especially combined with real information. For those who like science, Bowen has included a nice assortment of studies and facts on happiness.

Yes, there are plenty of happiness books out there, but I found this one had a little something extra.

About the Author
Barbara H. Yasue is a full-time tenured instructor in the ESOL (English for Students of Other Languages) department at Laney College in Oakland, California. In addition to teaching immigrant students, she has led teacher training programs in Portugal under a Fulbright grant, and for the UC Berkeley TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) certificate program. Ms. Yasue has also taught in Korea and Japan, and in Gabon for the Peace Corps. She received her MA in Teaching English as a Foreign/Second Language from San Francisco State University. Ms. Yasue’s passion to work with immigrants and to bring their concerns and gifts to light comes from her own experience growing up in an immigrant family.

I really enjoyed Barbara Yasue's book reading and informal presentation this evening. The subjects and their stories were interesting enough that I bought a copy of the book (titled "Transitions") and immediately spent the next three hours reading most of it.

Barbara, in her role as teacher of ESOL at Laney College, is in an unsurpassed position to look into the immigrant experience in the polyglot and multi cultural world of the East Bay. The issues involved are complex, but , without exception, I was struck by the hard work ethic and the determination to succeed of every story told in the book.

Good job, Barbara! Everyone else, do yourself a favor and at least take a look at this interesting book.

Transitions is a well-written, concise and compelling book. I appreciated the view in to the lives, challenges and successes faced by Ms. Yasue's students in a community college setting. Through her development of San San Win's story of fighting for democracy in Burma, and the search for a place in the west, she inspired me to further follow the current history of Burma in current times. This book is well worth reading; I highly recommend it.

About the Author
Jessica Gunderson grew up in the small town of Washburn, North Dakota. She has a bachelor’s degree from the University of North Dakota and an MFA in Creative Writing from Minnesota State University, Mankato. She has written more than fifty books for young readers. Her book Ropes of Revolution won the 2008 Moonbeam Award for best graphic novel. She currently lives in Madison, Wisconsin, with her husband and cat.

Denis Alonso was born in São Paulo, Brazil. When he was a kid, drawing was his favorite thing to do. With the support of his parents, he was able to improve his skills to become an illustrator. He graduated in design at Faculdade de Belas Artes de São Paulo, and worked with clients as Discovery Kids, MtvBrazil, Montegrappa, Unilever, Santillana Group, Editora Abril and many others. He lives with his wife and dog, Mr. Spock, in São Paulo. When he is not drawing he likes to practice boxing or cook with his wife.

It isn't great literature, it's just meant to be funny,,,,,,,,,,,

I saw this and checked it out of the library. For younger children it's just a fun story. For older children in combination with "How to write Fractured Fairy Tales" it's a great introduction to creative writing, point of view etc. I also like the back of the book that has questions under "think about it"

If you want to really know if this book is for you, go to your local library. If they don't have a copy there is always the option of the Inter-Library Loan procedure (books usually take about 3 weeks to arrive). I almost always preview books from the library before purchasing ... it has saved a lot of disappointment.
