About the Author

For Elaine N. Marieb, R.N., Ph.D., taking the needs of nursing and other allied health students into account has always been an integral part of her teaching style. Dr. Marieb began her teaching career at Springfield College, where she taught anatomy & physiology to physical education majors. She then joined the faculty of the Biological Science Division of Holyoke Community College in 1969 after receiving her Ph.D. in zoology from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. While teaching at Holyoke Community College, Dr. Marieb pursued her nursing education, which culminated in a Master of Science degree with a clinical specialization in gerontology from the University of Massachusetts. This experience, along with continual feedback from health care professionals (including generations of former students taught by Dr. Marieb), has inspired the unique perspective and accessibility for which this book is known.

 

Dr. Marieb’s commitment to students extends beyond teaching and writing. Recognizing the challenges students face, Dr. Marieb contributes to the New Directions Program at Holyoke Community College by funding a staffed drop-in center and by providing several full-tuition scholarships each year for women who are returning to college after a hiatus or attending college for the first time. She also funds the E. N. Marieb Science Research Awards at Mount Holyoke College (which promotes research by undergraduate science majors) and has underwritten renovation and updating of one of the biology labs in Mount Holyoke’s Clapp Laboratory. Recognizing the severe national shortage of nursing faculty, Dr. Marieb also underwrites the Nursing Scholars of the Future Grant Program at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst.

In 1994, Dr. Marieb received the Benefactor Award from the National Council for Resource Development, American Association of Community Colleges, which recognizes her ongoing sponsorship of student scholarships, faculty teaching awards, and other academic contributions to Holyoke Community College. In May 2000, the science building at Holyoke Community College was named in her honor.

 

Dr. Marieb is an active member of the Human Anatomy and Physiology Society (HAPS) and the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS). Additionally, while actively engaged as an author, Dr. Marieb serves as a consultant for the Benjamin Cummings Interactive Physiology® CD-ROM series. This text—Essentials of Human Anatomy & Physiology, Tenth Edition–is the latest expression of her commitment to the needs of the students pursuing the study of A&P.

When not involved in academic pursuits, Dr. Marieb is a world traveler and has vowed to visit every country on this planet. Shorter term, she serves on the board of directors of the famed Marie Selby Botanical Gardens and on the scholarship committee of the Women’s Resources Center of Sarasota County. She is an enthusiastic supporter of the local arts and enjoys a competitive match of doubles tennis.

Somewhat catches up on the previous 1992 edition, but ESSENTIALS is the key word

This is not half as thick as the Anatomy & Physiology textbook I own from 1992, which is titled "Human Anatomy & Physiology" by the same author. This version is the updated "ESSENTIALS". It does not go into near as much depth and detail, but that is probably due to the incredible amount of knowledge that has deluged the field in the ensuing 20 years. I expect 1st year student are expected to grasp ONLY the 'essentials' before delving into a specialty. Sad really... and I can only hope it really DOES catch up on what I've missed in the last 2 decades.

Anatomy even a 60 year old can understand

This is required reading for a class I'm taking. The content is well organized. Language is friendly. Easy-to-understand illustrations and tables. Helpful self-tests and summaries are included with each chapter. The companion online module, Mastering A&P, is fantastic. There are a lot of planned redundancies between all the study aids, which I really appreciate; they help me identify what's most important.

I thought this came with my lab and mastering code, that's the whole reason I bought this version because it was cheaper and I thought it came with the program. But it did not, now I have to pay even more than what I wanted to cause I have to buy the my lab and mastering program. Thanks for this crap

Nice, new take on an old fable...

This is a very cute take on the Little Red Hen bashing bread. This isn't as healthy a story, but it would be great to read afterwards to do reading comprehension and comparison. Illustrations are very pleasing and the moral at the end is sweet.

pretty good junk

I could not resist this book. I can't believe I dropped the cash, but I did, and then spent all day today reading it. I just finished it.

First, a short history of my fandom--I was a GnR fan when I was a very young teenager, I lived for their videos coming up on MTV, I bought Rip magazine, I saw them at the LA coliseum with my parents. Even though I came from a hippie artsy background, something about them hooked me and I became a slutty wannabe rocker chick at 13. I still think they're awesome musically.

OK so my review--a fun read. Full of crazy details about partying, debauchery, excess. Pretty much every detail of GnR's formation, life, and dissolution. Slash's voice is pretty brash and honest. I trusted him, I trusted that he was always telling his truth and trying to be objective, and he's pretty careful about not trying to paint W. Axl like an as***le, and even praising him quite a bit. I skimmed some parts at the end because I don't care that much about all the various boys and the details of their beefs, and Velvet Revolver is not interesting to me. I would have liked more personal stuff, more stuff about sex and romance and artistic inspiration and less about this and that manager.

My main criticism is extremely lazy editing. I am not nitpicky about this stuff, but I swear man, there were some retarded sentences in this book, and a bunch of typos and inconsistencies, as well as structural issues. I was like, could they not pay someone an extra $100 to do a final proofread? For god's sake, when I pay $30 for a book I expect it to be coherent. I know, it's not fine literature, but sheesh. Also, there were times when the 'voice' was so clearly not Slash's it was almost comical, it was occasionally haughty and erudite all the sudden, forcing you to remember that it ghostwritten or cowritten or whatever you call it. But mostly it was totally fun and Slash is a riot, although I'm never going to be his girlfriend, or roommate! Pretty amazing he lived through all that excess. God must have spared him in hopes of a GnR reunion...

Introspective talented guy who just happens to be an `eternal teenager`

While Saul Hudson (Slash) turns out to be a warm and friendly, introspective talented guy who just happens to be an `eternal teenager` with a few idiotic premises, I'm going to drop one rating star on this oversized treatment of his life because of narrative repetition. We get it that he was heavily into booze and opiates all through his youth and adulthood until age 41, a year before this 2007 autobio ends. There is a solid 30% of the book describing the details of how the music was created through chaos and the amazing GNR story from top to bottom -- which is done very well -- and his unique upbringing by his very talented parents. But most of it is saturated with continuous drug exploits, each of which had a sameness to them. Drugs were a big part of the rock star image back in the day and these guys were all throwbacks; I have no argument about what they did or didn't do to party. That's life. The reader does realize this is a big part of Slash's life story, and he does clean up at the very end as the Velvet Revolver stage emerges, but Saul's booze-to-heroin-and-vice-versa addiction cycle is so repetitious in the book's pacing and so similar each time he describes it, that his narrative drags because you've heard it many times already. Coupled with the manuscript's long length, it did get a little monotonous. However, if you hang in there to the end as I did, you will discover a truly compassionate, intelligent, thoughtful man with the bright spirit of a great musician!

Great book from a great artist

I would recommend this book to anyone who has had or has issues with drugs. Anyone who is a guitar player, who likes gnr who loves slash or looking to be entertained by some great stories. In this book slash let's us all in on his experiences as a kid all the way into his adult life. This is a very intimate book with a legends perspective. Thanks for the awesome read slash!!

Think you know everything about walkable cities? Not until you read this.

I'm no stranger to Jeff Speck's work (Suburban Nation, Smart Growth Manual). He and I sing the same hymns, and preach from the same editions of The Book of Great City Living and Pedestrian Life. I bought Speck's latest book because, as an urban designer and writer myself, I felt I should have this in my library. I figured I might find a couple of useful tidbits to make cities happier places to live, but no huge revelations. Nothing that I didn't know already.

Wrong. This book is packed with astute insights into what makes for livable, lovable communities. Speck's genius, I think, is finding connections between seemingly disparate urban phenomena. And offering solutions that are pragmatic, implementable, and so, so...SIMPLE that it is hard to believe we have gotten it so wrong for so long.

I wish this book came out when I was wrapping up my latest book Making Transit Fun!: How to Entice Motorists from Their Cars (and onto their feet, a bike, or bus). My book is pretty good ;-) But it would have been better had I had Speck's book before mine went to press.

Best of all, Speck's literary style is engaging. This book is an easy read, an inspiring read, and a compelling read. I thought I was just going to flip through a few pages, maybe read a chapter or two, and then place it on my shelf alongside the dozens of other planning books. Wrong again. I was surprised how quickly I became absorbed in this book. Most planning books are drier than butter-less popcorn. Speck's book glides down the gullet with flavor.

Breezy and engaging--like a great walk!

At a recent book talk, I heard Jeff Speck discuss this book and his life's work, and was entirely compelled to read the rest myself. It turns out he really does have the life experience, numerous skills, wide exposure to various urban situations, and the concrete ideas to deliver the outcomes we want to create a walkable life.

I was particularly engaged by the three "E" features that were coming together: epidemiology, environment, and economics--that were clearly all in favor of urban density, mixed use, and transit oriented development (where it is appropriate). The book backs up these things with evidence on each count.

And then about a month later at a city meeting, here he was again. He's been working with my city planners in Somerville MA to turn our city into the top tier of walkable cities in the US. We are at the right place and right time: we are about to get several MBTA train stations, and currently have the chance to plan and strategize around them.

He acknowledges that we were born on 3rd base (and I don't dispute this). But he has evidence and methods that can help us be an incredibly walkable city. I think he has the goods. I hope we can act on it.

Certainly I have to admit that this book is delightful in part because it matches all of my cognitive bias (heh). I love cities (especially older ones), and I would love to live almost entirely without a car. Many of the examples he uses as both good and bad scenarios are places I've lived--so I know his facts are solid on those. But the text contains enough data and references that you can check the information with other sources, look at images on the web, and see that the story holds.

I wish it had contained more photographic evidence of some of the features he describes. Some of them he showed at our city meeting and they were very effective. But it is possible to seek them out in other ways with the internet, of course.

Certain hot-buttons (like traffic engineers and "starchitects") clearly earn some of Speck's ire. But obviously these stereotypes were for effect, and there are good actors on these things as well. And it will help me to recognize some of these things in the future at city planning meetings and have the ammunition to counter points or suggest alternatives that make more sense.

The breezy and engaging style (including citing The Onion and Monty Python, for example) allow you to quickly get the points, which are well made.

I will be recommending this book to my neighbors as we proceed through the next few years of getting our city enhancements. It will give them a sound basis to understand some decisions that might be hard to grasp at first. And I'm really looking forward to the future with more walkability, for everyone's benefit.

Awesome - both educational and entertaining

This is a great read... the author is funny and smart, and really knows the details of whats happening (and what should happen) in American cities. He really boils down the policy jargon and hot air into practical ideas, and also illuminates some of the history of how cities got the way they are (the 70s). I disagree with his seeming total anti-car bias (esp innovation in cars), but that comes with the territory; in any case, this book is one of the best I've read in the past few years (on a par with 'Fooled by Randomness' for example) ; and thats saying a lot for a public policy book... My advice - buy it!

This book will change the way you go forward by forcing you to go back. A life changing read!

From Sand and Ash is a harrowing story of love and faith shrouded in death and despair. Amy Harmon brings together the best and the worst of humanity on these pages, paving this journey with violence and bravery, horror and love. It's a ruthless barrage of emotions, this story, a relentless war between life and death, between good and evil, illustrated exquisitely by an author whose writing prowess knows no bounds. I was torn between eagerly unearthing the twists and turns that would surely come with each turn of the page, and dreading what was to come, dreading this book ending at all. The story of Eva Rosselli and Angelo Bianco is as enchanting as it is chilling. The love they share is forbidden, both by duty and by law. But their attraction, the absolute truth of their lifelong love is a beautiful, palpable thing that consumes the reader despite the horrific circumstances in which that love exists.

I've read many books of the true accounts of holocaust survivors, seen the movies and documentaries, taken classes concentrating on this area of study. But never before have I been made to fall in love with an individual, with a couple, with a family, before I took such a horrific journey with them. But, more, From Sand and Ash is a poignant reminder of where we all come from, that no matter where we live or who we pray to or what we believe in, we all come from the same place. Without a doubt, my favorite book of 2016. A stunning masterpiece!

I tried to brace myself for this story. I really did. I knew it would be a tough read and I knew what would eventually happen. But the mark of a great Amy Harmon book is her expertly crafted story that builds so very slowly - she builds you up and up and before you know it you’ve fallen for her characters and then it happens - the downfall that completely shatters you. I was not prepared for the onslaught of emotions this story brought out in me. There was one point when I just sat and wept over the horrific events that the innocent victims of this senseless war endured. And in true Amy Harmon fashion, she manages to find beauty within the horror, and teaches us lessons in even the ugliest of circumstances.

Amy does not get overly detailed about politics or the war, and everything was broken down into simple facts and explanations. She spared us the gory details and yet still manages to paint such a distinct portrayal of the suffering that took place during this time. The common theme within all of her books is that love and faith conquers all, and how hope and resilience can help you rise above even the most difficult of situations. I think her trademark message has never shined more brightly than it does in From Sand and Ash. Eva & Angelo’s story is one that I will never ever forget.

I really hope that people give this book a chance. Even if you’re not a fan of historical fiction, the message in this book is one that we need to be reminded of. We need to remember the atrocities that happened in Europe during WW2 so that millions did not die in vain, and nothing like this will EVER happen again. Thank you Amy, for honoring the memory of my Jewish ancestors and the millions of others who lived during this awful time in our history.

From Sand and Ash is so much more than a whimsical romantic tale. It's history sprinkled with a love story. Life injected with death and humanity revived from the ashes of evil and death. In a time where hope was hard to find and God was quiet no matter what God you prayed to, this was a time you had to hang on to your faith or give up entirely. Life starts everyday. In the womb a heart beats. That little soul has no idea or choice as to where they will end up and how they will be raised. The beliefs of each child is from those around them. It starts with where they live and especially what religion their loved ones practice. World War II is the perfect example of how you can't help where you were born or what God you serve but you absolutely can love, live and support anyone you choose to if you find the strength. So many fought the only way they could by hiding and those that hid them were truly the best example of Love in human form. Catholics hiding Jews. Jews helping Catholics. This is where God is love.

Amy took a true life emotional topic, a tormented part of world history and gave it faces. So many faces and so many hearts. I felt such despair when this story started because this was such a tumultuous time and place.

Our hero Angelo and heroine Eva were two characters that were vividly portrayed in every single way. Growing up together and falling in love when it's forbidden truly had my heart racing in fear and in excitement. Such heartbreaking choices that had to be made. Angelo was a true hero in every way. Eva was strong and loving. For every single time Angelo struggled with his faith and for every time Eva fought to never give up I held on to hope for these two.

This was a time of such devastating circumstances and such horrible prejudice. I was afraid for the hero and heroine from the start but I had faith that even if it all ended like so many lives ended back then that Amy would show humanity at its worst and at its best.

There were characters that stood out in bravery and and sacrifice. I felt their stories mirrored so many out there that never got a chance to speak out and share. Amy brought so much to life in this amazing tale. Thankfully the ending was the best I could hope for and the pain I felt was worth it even if it's only experienced in a story to see such a love story unfold but also to see how truly brave so many people were. While so many stories in this era had such tragic endings we should be thankful we live in a time where we can be free to worship and to love. I feel after ever single Amy Harmon book that I have been somewhat changed in a way only a magical story teller can achieve. From Sand and Ash truly will stay with me always.
