Amazon.com Review
Amazon Best of the Month, November 2008: Now that he's gotten us talking about the viral life of ideas and the power of gut reactions, Malcolm Gladwell poses a more provocative question in Outliers: why do some people succeed, living remarkably productive and impactful lives, while so many more never reach their potential? Challenging our cherished belief of the "self-made man," he makes the democratic assertion that superstars don't arise out of nowhere, propelled by genius and talent: "they are invariably the beneficiaries of hidden advantages and extraordinary opportunities and cultural legacies that allow them to learn and work hard and make sense of the world in ways others cannot." Examining the lives of outliers from Mozart to Bill Gates, he builds a convincing case for how successful people rise on a tide of advantages, "some deserved, some not, some earned, some just plain lucky."

Outliers can be enjoyed for its bits of trivia, like why most pro hockey players were born in January, how many hours of practice it takes to master a skill, why the descendents of Jewish immigrant garment workers became the most powerful lawyers in New York, how a pilots' culture impacts their crash record, how a centuries-old culture of rice farming helps Asian kids master math. But there's more to it than that. Throughout all of these examples--and in more that delve into the social benefits of lighter skin color, and the reasons for school achievement gaps--Gladwell invites conversations about the complex ways privilege manifests in our culture. He leaves us pondering the gifts of our own history, and how the world could benefit if more of our kids were granted the opportunities to fulfill their remarkable potential. --Mari Malcolm

From Publishers Weekly
SignatureReviewed by Leslie ChangIn Outliers, Gladwell (The Tipping Point) once again proves masterful in a genre he essentially pioneered—the book that illuminates secret patterns behind everyday phenomena. His gift for spotting an intriguing mystery, luring the reader in, then gradually revealing his lessons in lucid prose, is on vivid display. Outliers begins with a provocative look at why certain five-year-old boys enjoy an advantage in ice hockey, and how these advantages accumulate over time. We learn what Bill Gates, the Beatles and Mozart had in common: along with talent and ambition, each enjoyed an unusual opportunity to intensively cultivate a skill that allowed them to rise above their peers. A detailed investigation of the unique culture and skills of Eastern European Jewish immigrants persuasively explains their rise in 20th-century New York, first in the garment trade and then in the legal profession. Through case studies ranging from Canadian junior hockey champions to the robber barons of the Gilded Age, from Asian math whizzes to software entrepreneurs to the rise of his own family in Jamaica, Gladwell tears down the myth of individual merit to explore how culture, circumstance, timing, birth and luck account for success—and how historical legacies can hold others back despite ample individual gifts. Even as we know how many of these stories end, Gladwell restores the suspense and serendipity to these narratives that make them fresh and surprising. One hazard of this genre is glibness. In seeking to understand why Asian children score higher on math tests, Gladwell explores the persistence and painstaking labor required to cultivate rice as it has been done in East Asia for thousands of years; though fascinating in its details, the study does not prove that a rice-growing heritage explains math prowess, as Gladwell asserts. Another pitfall is the urge to state the obvious: No one, Gladwell concludes in a chapter comparing a high-IQ failure named Chris Langan with the brilliantly successful J. Robert Oppenheimer, not rock stars, not professional athletes, not software billionaires and not even geniuses—ever makes it alone. But who in this day and age believes that a high intelligence quotient in itself promises success? In structuring his book against that assumption, Gladwell has set up a decidedly flimsy straw man. In the end it is the seemingly airtight nature of Gladwell's arguments that works against him. His conclusions are built almost exclusively on the findings of others—sociologists, psychologists, economists, historians—yet he rarely delves into the methodology behind those studies. And he is free to cherry-pick those cases that best illustrate his points; one is always left wondering about the data he evaluated and rejected because it did not support his argument, or perhaps contradicted it altogether. Real life is seldom as neat as it appears in a Malcolm Gladwell book. (Nov.)Leslie T. Chang is the author of Factory Girls: From Village to City in a Changing China (Spiegel & Grau).

From Bookmarks Magazine
What explains whether or not Outliers succeeded with a given reviewer? Sometimes, Gladwell's trademark style and wit were sufficient. Many critics noted some anecdotes that did not quite seem coherent, but they commended the book anyway because Gladwell is so entertaining and enthusiastic. Yet Gladwell's talent alone was insufficient to earn reviewers' highest marks. (Indeed, several who focused on this aspect of the book were annoyed that the author seemed to be merely offering common sense with a New Yorker sheen.) The reviewers with whom Gladwell truly succeeded were those who noticed the moral message of his book: if the factors that determine greatness are so much more complicated than individual efforts, our society should provide a nurturing environment where serendipitous coincidences abound and every person has a real chance to succeed.

A people pleaser for the masses
By Felix O. Hartmann
I usually love all the books I read since I am very selective. However this was a let down for a number of reasons:
1. While it started off strongly, it rapidly fell off in all aspects about a third in. The writing was less to the point, the points were less groundbreaking, and seemed to be supported by rather anecdotal observations. It had a comeback here and there, but the majority of the book as weak imo.
2. Overdone storytelling. About 1/5th of the book is spent on a chapter on plane crashes. He makes a very smart and interesting point, but that point was made after about 30 minutes, yet he kept going bringing example after example in excruciating detail. This is closely related to point 1 as it appears that as substance decreased, the exposition of description increased.
3. His stance is too extreme. If the tale of the self made man is one extreme, then outliers is the other extreme as it basically attempts to discredit the successful and say it was all due to luck. He keeps mentioning Bill Gates and how "lucky" he was to have a computer in his school. He also mentions that there were only a handful of school at the time to have such a computer. Well a handful of schools say 12? With say 1000 students on average each? That means 12,000 others had the same chance as him. 12,000 that did not program all night long, to learn this new skill, but rather chose to play ball or worry about boys/girls. While we can discredit everyone by the logic of "if X did not happen, he would not have accomplished Y", the truth is this Malcolm: We are around so much opportunity, more so now than ever, that it's less a question of whether there is opportunity, nut whether we take advantage of it. You are correct that now I'd have a harder time creating my own operating system, that ship has sailed, I agree, but that is looking at success with a very narrow lense. There is always an opportune industry for one to break into, and all it takes is seizing those opportunities. As with your mother, you mention in the Epilogue, if it were not for someone having given her money to go to school, things would have been very different. Don't you think that is selling her short? I'm sure she would have kept asking until she found someone else to give her money.
The true story of success is that successful people will not let their story be changed by adding or removing a variable from their path, they will keep fighting and find something to replace that variable. That's why some of the most successful people have been declined or faced defeat (be it investors, agents, etc.) over a hundred times and kept going. If you'd go back and take away their investor, its safe to say they would have kept going to another 100 and eventually found someone else. And that attitude, as you may claim, is not a stone cold result of legacy, as both those born of a privileged background as well as those with the most painful of pasts have those attitudes... because an attitude is decided in the moment, not something we are born with or given.

In conclusion, it is an interesting read if you want to learn more about people, but take it with a grain of salt. This is NOT personal development, or anything of the sort in case you think this is a book I read and learn to be successful... quite contrary the message appears to comfort those that don't have success and blame society, and poke those with success implying that whatever they have was not earned.

Personality I like how the author focused on more than one person ...
By Hannah Denney
Book Review for Outliers
The book Outliers is all about success, and what it means to different people. Now everyone has different aspects on success. Outliers digs a little deeper, and talks about well-known people and their journey to success and fame. Personality I like how the author focused on more than one person or thought. Throughout the chapters there were different stories and different characters which gave the book more variety. Each chapter pulled you deeper into the story and plot.
The one thing I wasn’t a fan of in this book, is that it was very difficult to follow along or understand. Don’t get me wrong I loved the individuality of each chapter, but in a regular story each chapter tells you more about the characters and setting. On the other hand Outliers is a completely different concept. The story can be very hard to follow and understand at times, when it jumps from story to story. You may misunderstand a sentence or two and have to go back and read it over again. I certainly did.
Now this book is not for everyone, what book is, but I would highly recommend this to anyone who likes non-fictional books, or to anyone looking for a deep read. It’s a great book to read when you have nothing to do or you’re just relaxing and enjoying yourself. This book may be about success, but it’s also very deep. It really makes you ponder on the world round you. If you’re looking for a good, meaningful, non-fiction novel, this is definitely the book for you!

Great book
By Joshua Leeger
This book changed the way I look at things. Gladwell breaks success down into a few components:

Meaningfulness - The thing has to have some meaning for you, some deep meaning. You need this to create or have a desire or need to do the thing - you won't do it if there's no need to do it, or no desire.

Expertise - Which is different from "success." It takes 10,000 hours of consistent, deliberate practice to become "expert" at something. If you have the desire/need, you won't mind putting in the time.

Support - No one does anything alone. Every successful person had support from someone at some critical point in time.

History - Your own genealogical history will have a huge impact on what your do - how you act/react regarding things. Your personal history will have a similarly huge impact - how you view the world is based on your experience of it from an early age.

Culture - The culture you were raised in, and the culture you live/work in, will determine your behavior to a large extent, unless you're really aware of it, and can work with it.

Luck - It takes a lot of luck to be "successful." You have to be in the right places at the right times. You have to have all of the cards stacked up in your favor.

There are some things we just can't get around. Our genes, for instance. Our family history. Our past. Those things are done. The good thing is, they are done. We don't have to think about them, unless they create impediments for us. If they do, we need to deal with them and get over/around those issues.

We can't really get around luck, either...though some people feel like we make our own luck (and I tend to agree). We can do our best to stack the cards in our favor, to create Win/Win situations whenever possible, and walk away from situations that are Lose/Win, or Win/Lose. That will go a long way. Maybe as far as luck itself can at times.

The rest of it is simply finding what's most meaningful to us, and being true to it. It takes a lot of work, a lot of bravery, a lot of soul-searching. But when it's all over, wouldn't you rather be able to say you used your life to become who you really are? That you realized your fullest potential? The alternative seems very sad.

Review
" Birth Emergency Skills Training is a book that should be in every midwife s personal library. If you take the first letter of each word in the title, it spells BEST. The book is a comprehensive Manual for Out-of-Hospital Midwives. It will help you serve women better because you will be armed with an amazing amount of information, right at your fingertips. It is spiced with many mnemonics to help you remember key information. It also includes many lists, tables, illustrations and photos Bonnie is also an accomplished artist! Between the covers you will find information on common complications as well as very obscure ones that hopefully you will never see. It covers complications that occur in pregnancy, birth and postpartum, with help on what to do and when to refer care.
Bonnie has excellent discussions of critical thinking in emergencies, how to manage, co-manage or refer as well as a great epilogue on the herstory of midwifery. Some other chapters include bleeding and hemorrhage, pain, hypertensive disorders, trauma and shock, preterm labor, multiple gestation, malpresentations and shoulder dystocia, fetal heart monitoring and neonatal resuscitation. This book is an excellent resource for all birth practitioners. The only thing I found missing is discussion of the importance of nutrition in correcting and avoiding complications.
If something unusual is occurring, this book will give you the information to explain to your client what is likely going on with her and her baby. When a complication comes up, it is important to remember mom is still having a baby; that is, she having a miracle. The rest of her care needs to be CARE. In any case, this book will give you the information you need to serve mothers and babies well.
As midwives our role is to ascertain normality, or to help get a woman into the normal range with information, knowledge and techniques. BEST has all of these. Doulas and childbirth educators can use this book, too. Often they are the only ones who will explain situations to the women they serve, this book potentially has a larger role among other practitioners. "

" What a terrific educational offering! "
Helen Varney Burst, Author of Varney's Midwifery

" Bonnie Gruenberg has brought together her unique talents as an artist, an experienced Emergency Medical Technician, a Certified Nurse-Midwife and mother in a well organized, concise and creative approach to the identification, evaluation and management of care of the emergent complications of childbearing. Although the treatise is directed to midwives practicing in the out of hospital setting, it is a reference that will help all providers caring for childbearing women regardless of setting as well as all student midwives, nurses and physicians. It provides an excellent review for exams on this subject."
Kitty Ernst, President American College of Nurse-Midwives
Mary Breckinridge Chair of Midwifery, Frontier School of Midwifery and Family Nursing.

" ... systematic and clear approach to critical thinking, assessment, diagnosis and intervention when emergencies arise. "

" Bonnie Gruenberg's expertise as both a midwife with extensive out of hospital and in-hospital experience combined with her background as a Paramedic gives her insight into the world of both normal and complicated births. The BEST Course modules were interactive and engaging, and got right to the core content very quickly. The accompanying text is a rich resource before, during and after the weekend course. "
--Kim Perry, CPM, APN, CNM, MSNO

" This book is phenomenal. It offers a concise discussion of obstetrical problems that will serve both out of hospital and in hospital birth practitioners as a resource in problem solving and providing safe care in the event of an obstetrical problem or emergency. The ethical responsibility of the midwife in recognizing abnormal and responding to it is importantly illustrated. "

book title doesn't fit book content
By E. Ross
I was expecting a book on how to deal with emergencies outside of a hospital setting, instead, this book was very medicalized. There is some good information in this book, but you need to know that the tone of the book is "expect the worst," and if that doesn't happen, then maybe you are okay with having an out of hospital birth.
An example is how third stage is handled. This book recommends managed third stage with chord traction and pitocin for ALL births. I believe others will be interested in knowing this before purchasing this book.

Kindle Edition has extensive formatting issues
By Jenne Alderks
Extraneous code, absence of bullet points, and missing spaces between words made the book difficult to read at times, especially on important sections regarding pneumonics and need-to-be-memorized tables or lists. At times the organization of the book was confusing, not following a clear progression from one topic to another.

At times, the author switches from directions for home birth midwife to Directions to EMT without appropriate signaling or recognition that CPMs and Licensed midwives in the United States do not carry intubation supplies and rely on emergency transport for fetal intubation. Perhaps CNMs practicing out of hospital are able to legally do this, as registered midwives in Canada are allowed as well.

A CPM or LM might appreciate a book written on emergency skills by another LM or CPM rather than one so steeped in medical model training such as this one. The approach and mentality is very medical and therefore foreign to midwives trained to identify normal and escalate from there, whereas Thai book trains providers to look for pathology and de-escalate to determine that normal is presenting before them.

Essential Reading
By T. Mudrick
If you provide maternity care for mothers and babies you must read this book. The information is presented in a very user friendly way, complete with many mnemonics to help you quickly recall vital information in an emergency. Thoroughly researched and cited, this book is chock full of information and helpful hints. The differential diagnoses are particularly welcome, especially when trying to assess the etiology of pain. Highly recommended.

Micro-controller meets scale modeling
By Amazon Customer
As an electronics engineer I liked his projects. I liked seeing multiple Arduino projects. I think enough basic information is given that most people could make a go of his projects. Note I'm not a model railroad person, I wanted to see yet another application of Arduino technology. And this book fit the bill, I even learned a few railroading bits and pieces along the way.

Beautifully illustrated overview of quantum physics
By Dr. Kenneth T. Bastin MD
I bought this book just over one year ago and I refer to it occasionally for the thrill of understanding quantum physics from a laymans nonmathematical viewpoint. There is no better book on the history of this branch of physics -- multiple sidebar illustrations and photos add to the "people" dimension of physics. The reader rides this thrill too and gets insight into Nobel winners and the contraptions used in experimental physics. The "New" in the title refers to an updated version of the book, providing confidence to the reader that the quality of the first book warranted an update by the publisher. This book should supplement any math based quantum physics course simply because the latter don't profile scientists as real people or have enough historical context. For nonphysicists, this is a great read, worthy of a long lasting presence on the family bookshelf.

Very Nice Book
By An Avid Reader
A very nice clearly organized book, well illustrated with photographs, graphs and diagrams, gently introducing the reader to the quirks of quantum physics. Even if you have read other similar books "Quantum Universe" will make an excellent addition to your library.

Very cranial subject matter......
By The Nice Brit
This book provides an overview of quantum physics. It starts with wave - particle duality and moves through the structure of the atom to the large scale structure of the Universe. Some of the material really makes the reader think hard so be prepared for some hard thinking! The book does warn the reader of this in places however. It also covers the applications of quantum physics to practical issues such as electron micropscopes and the transistor. The explanation of the periodic table of the elements was most illuminating. It also provides many little vignettes of key people such as Dirac, Heisenberg, Planck, etc. all of which are very interesting indeed. An excellent read!
