Martin Kaye is apparently offering his writing debut with this very fine and impressive little book. If this is the way he always thinks and writes then we have just encountered a valuable new asset in our search for making our lives more satisfying.

He opens his book with an invigorating and informative manner of discussion: ‘For a long time, the science of psychology has been focused on the negative aspects of human behavior. It mainly worked within the disease model. Psychology was about finding what is wrong with you. “Spot the looney”, as Martin Seligman, the former President of the American Psychological Association (APA), puts it. This negative focus was of course of great value. We now know a lot more about treating, or even curing, several mental disorders. The problem was, that we knew very little about things like happiness, success, goal achievement, positive habits, motivation, and so on. From a scientific point of view, there was simply a lack of balance. As a result, when it came to these topics, most people were left to figure it for themselves, or to listen to, or watch someone who (at least according to themselves) had figured it out. The obvious downside of this was that it wasn’t really possible to verify whether the advice that was given was good or not. It could seem to make sense, and people would apply it, but in actuality the method could have severe flaws. Or, the advice could be 100% correct, but it would seem counterintuitive to many - not “feel right” - and thus a lot of people would dismiss it and never implement it.’

Throughout his book Martin leaves some jewels along the path – like ‘Everything we do, all choices we make, are ultimately a way of increasing our levels of happiness. Make it a Goal to Read this Book

Once in awhile, a voracious reader such as myself is lucky enough to come across a book out of the blue that reminds you what a wonderful place Amazon can be.

I believe I have read most of the popular titles on goal setting, motivation and positive psychology. Having said that the sad truth is it is hard to come by new and original thinking when it comes to these topics. Luckily for me (and you dear, potential reader) Martin Kaye has presented us all with a new, bold take on these subjects in his highly recommended book Goal Setting.

Kaye is not afraid to cook up some sacred cows and makes abundantly clear that his process of critical thinking has left him with no time for “…fairies nor unicorns…” or any of the nonsense that passes for helpful advice for anyone trying to set and meet personal goals.

He offers plenty of scientifically-backed research to support his claims and also provides a helpful workbook (via download from his site) to help readers follow his prescriptions on effective goal setting. These prescriptions include recommendations to physically write our goals down, how happiness ties into goals, setting up daily routines that support our efforts and why visualization might not be the best way to achieve our goals.

This is a quick read from an author who not only has done his homework but presents the information (and his recommendations) in a clear and concise way that can help anyone get better at getting better when it comes to setting and meeting their goals.

If this book is any indication of Kaye’s talent I look forward to future works from him.

GOOD, CLEAR, AND CONCISE

I'm cheap and have a Prime membership. Due to those two factors I tend to download a lot of free books to my Kindle. For MANY of those books your lucky to get your money's worth. Editing, spelling, and grammar errors have to be overlooked before you can even begin to evaluate content, which is often simplistic.
What I do like about many of the free downloads is that they tend to be short, and lack the large percentage of irrelevant filler which makes up so much of the "real books." Although the "real books" are better edited, the takeaways typically could be highlighted with bullet points and the reader would have gotten more value in a fraction of the time.
Martin Kaye's book "Goal Setting" manages to be the best of both worlds. It's very short, has good relevant information, and is well written.
I think many times reading a goal setting book becomes just another way of procrastinating before actually taking action to achieve them.
if you want to get some practical advise on accomplishing your goals, and you want to go ahead and get started, I would recommend Martin Kaye's "Goal Setting." Worth well more than I paid.
Often K.I.S.S. is the best advice you can get.

Tobin demonstrates that Muslims combine their interests in exerting a visible Islam with the opportunities and challenges of advanced capitalism in an urban setting, which ultimately results in the cultivation of a "neoliberal Islamic piety." Neoliberal piety, Tobin contends, is created by both Islamizing economic practices and economizing Islamic piety, and is done in ways that reflect a modern, cosmopolitan style and aesthetic, revealing a keen interest in displays of authenticity on the part of the actors. Tobin highlights sites at which economic life and Islamic virtue intersect: Ramadan, the hijab, Islamic economics, Islamic banking, and consumption. Each case reflects the shift from conditions and contexts of highly regulated and legalized moral behaviors to greater levels of uncertainty and indeterminacy. In its ethnographic richness, this book shows that actors make normative claims of an authentic, real Islam in economic practice and measure them against standards that derive from Islamic law, other sources of knowledge, and the pragmatics of everyday life.

So disappointing

Ms. Guiliano seems to have gotten a bit complacent about her responsibility to her readers on this one, and I'm really surprised that her editors didn't hold her to a higher standard. French Women Don't Get Fat was a great read, choc full of specific, helpful tips, anecdotes that readers could relate to, even recipes. French Women Don't Get Facelifts is a chore to read. It doesn't flow well, and the thoughts are poorly organized, as if they had been jotted down on airplane cocktail napkins and typed up by an assistant. And the content itself is, well, so basic and trite as to be pretty much worthless. What happened? Not sure, but I really regret having spent money on this book. There's nothing here but Ms. Guiliano's brand, and she isn't doing it any favors. She really should have worked harder for her readers.

I enjoy reading anything Mireille Giuliano writes and according to this recent addition to her lineup, she is obligated by her publisher for another book beyond this one, which I will look forward to reading. I have a copy of all her previous offerings and look upon time spent with one of her chatty books as a pleasant part of my day.

That being said, I got the impression this book was rather hurriedly dashed off between intercontinental trips. It seemed to hit the high spots, wasn’t much on detail, and although I can understand a rehash of some of her previous material for the benefit of new readers, I also felt she relied too heavily on past efforts. Frankly, I expected, and hoped for, a little more. So much more could have been done with this book, that would have been helpful, and a number of opportunities were missed to expand what it had to offer. I sincerely hope that her next book will not be a rehash of past material with a different title. My comments follow.

Exercise: Walk, swim, climb stairs, do some yoga. All from previous books. Although she admits to now having added some Pilates exercises to the mix which she does at home, and mentioned strength training, she does not share her new found knowledge or anything of her personal routine with us. Disappointing. The most worthwhile part of this section was a detailed instruction regarding four yoga breathing exercises, which was very well done. Everything else was short on detail, hit the high spots.

Diet: The author’s personal diet appears to be primarily vegetable, low protein, low carb, low calorie, heavy on dairy using that for a lot of the protein, which would not set well with a goodly percentage of the readership. The only alternative suggested was to eat Mediterranean, which we have been hearing from a variety of sources for the past 20-30 years.

Recipes: This book has fewer recipes than any of her others, so there is not much in that department to whet anticipation.

Makeup and Hair: Useful admonition to look appropriate for one’s age instead of like a circus clown with things that are too obvious, amusing anecdote to illustrate this. Typical advice from previous books to get a good, professional haircut several times a year, as well as professional color if gray is not for you.

Supplements: Author displays fearfulness and lack of knowledge in this department. Could have done without this totally useless chapter that espouses the 1920’s ideal of getting everything from one’s food, and says nothing about the European bans on GMOs; organics, depleted soil and comparisons of nutritional value in food from 50 years ago versus today.

Facelifts: Part of the title of the book and this chapter could be boiled down to, don’t get one because it won’t match the rest of you, just use creams and lotions the way my mother and grandmother did and you’ll be fine. To be perfectly honest, Raquel Welch’s book, which is available on Amazon, did a much better, more informative job with more detailed information on this subject, and I highly recommend it, Raquel: Beyond the Cleavage.

Employment: Although a minor section toward the end, rather an afterthought, it should not have been included due to the lack of knowledge on the part of the author of the hardships the majority of people 50 and over face in the U.S. regarding employment during these times. I can understand that because the author’s life and finances insulate her from harsher realities, and this is part of the charm of her writing; however, it would also have been best to leave this bit out altogether.

Advice from older women of her acquaintance: This is definitely an area of missed opportunity. These wise, elderly ladies of class and substance were briefly mentioned, all too briefly quoted, and served only to whet the appetite for an entrée that never appeared.

loved her other books - just not this

I absolutely adore Mireilles other books. I really do believe her culinary and diet/lifestyle tools are her forte. I ordered this book with the confidence of loving and owning her other three books. I have just finished reading the book and ended the last 20% of the book just flicking and skimming the pages. Her advice is very general and not at all specific like her previous. Like her other reads, I was expecting some real pearls of wisdom - best kept secrets! They did not exist. Just general talk about thing we really know. Dare I say it, I found the book even boring in most areas. I would not purchase this as a gift for a friend. There are much better beauty books out there! What a shame and a disappointment this book was...!

Gino Finds Solid Ground

This is the album that made Gino Vannelli a commercial superstar.However that meant some musical consessions had to be made. On this recording Gino pulled back heavy on the ARP synthesizer orchestraion that had characterized his previous albums The Gist of the Gemini and A Pauper in Paradise and concentrated on live instrumentation. The jazzy R&B strains in his work are played up more then even before;the funky "Appaloosa","The River Must Flow" and "Love And Emotion" certainly accomplish this well. This album also contains "I Just Want To Stop",the pop ballad that became Gino's signature song and is the song most people currently associate with him. But the fusion leanings of the poignant declarations of familial love on the title track and "People I Belong To" show not only that Gino hadn't lost his golden artistic touch but that he cared a great deal about his family and the people who helped him become successful-as always he seems to have a huge heart when it comes to lyrics,but never looses his cool doing it. True on "Feel Like Flying" and the cryptic "The Evil Eye" there are definate hints of the "old" Gino where he tended to value artistic vision over commercial success. All that being true the fact that this album says a lot more about Gino the songcrafter and tunesmith then it does Gino the virtuoso it did have the effect of getting more people interested in his music.If you don't have any Gino in your collection and already own recordings by people like Steely Dan,Jan Hammer or even Edgar Winter (all often unsung artistic innovators in a similar genre as well) this is something you cannot do wrong with!

One of the best jazz/fusion/pop records, ever!

I will never tire of this album. I have to buy one or two every year because I keep giving them away. Gino, his brothers (Joe & Ross), and the rest of the players on this record seem to have had some magical sessions. The band is cookin'. The songs are great, the arrangements are great, the performances are great, the engineering, mixing and mastering are great (with the exception of an occasional peaky snare drum). Almost 35 years after its release, it holds up so nicely.

Should Be In Every Collection

My first taste of Gino Vannelli was the top 40 minor hit Powerful People which was on a lot of jukeboxes in the mid-70s, but it wasn't until Brother To Brother was issued that Vannelli really came to my attention.
This is one of those albums that every artist hopes to make, virtually flawless from beginning to end. Brother to Brother didn't hit me at once, I Just Wanna Stop was the song that received the most airplay as it fit in commercially with the kind of stuff that was being played on the radio at that time and was a song I didn't really care for. But you could hear the promise of Vannelli's music in the song; its tightness, its harmonies, and its positive vibes. So I bought Brother to Brother on vinyl and liked it more every time I played it.
My vinyl is in mothballs and I have been building a CD collection both of new music and the best of what I have on LP, so I recently purchased Brother To Brother on CD. Wow!! Its every bit as powerful and enjoyable now as when I first heard it. The music is uplifting, romantic, and soulful. With the exception of I Just Wanna Stop (which STILL sounds commercial), every song is a gem. Brother To Brother is a tour de force which belongs in every collection.

EXCITING BOOK

This book is about a mouse named Ralph who lives uinder a grandfather clock in a hotel with his families. Ralph is not just an ordinary mouse you see speaking in your attic, he is special. So special, that he has his own red motorcycle. With the motorcycle, he runs away from the hotel and his families because of his families' low trustworthy againist him. He runs away into a campsite with hundreds of boys and girls. Ralph finds himself in trouble with three cats when one of the boys named Gark catches him and keeps him from troubles.
There is no part of this book I disliked. None, because Beverly Cleary keeps yohh into the book. It actually "feels" like your there with Ralph and his ultimult adventures. She keeps you from stop rerading and say, "this book ...!" You rather say, "Gee, I wonder what happens on the next chapter!" I highly recommad you read this book instantly.
"I hab a better idea," said Garf. "I'll take you back to the hotel myself when my family comes to get me. They'll be spending the night there before they come and pick me up the day after tomorrow. The camo doesn't serve us lunch on the day we leave, so I know we'll stop at the Inn for lunchbefore we get home.It's the only place around here. I could easily take you along in my pocket." This quote meant a lot to me. This quote showed me that all Beverly Cleary books had a moral to the story. I really get to learn lots of things when I read her books. Like a history book with games on it so that you learn stuff and hab fun. My son loved this book when he was a kid and I have it in English. The vocabulary is a bit advanced for me but I read along in English as I go.

George Selden (1929–1989) wrote not only the adventures of Chester, Harry, Tucker, and their friends but also The Genie of Sutton Place, which was one of School Library Journal's Best Books of the Year.

Garth Williams (1912–1996) illustrated all of George Selden's Chester Cricket books. His other distinguished work includes Charlotte's Web, Stuart Little, and the Little House books.

How incredible the book was and how it changed my life.

This book was incredible. I know how corny it sounds but it actually has changed my life. I read it in fifth grade about 5 times. I'm 18 years old and still remember the book. Ever since I read it I've wanted to visit Connecticut and eat Liverwurst. I tried the liverwurst and it wasn't too good. I still want to visit Connecticut though. I encourage everyone to read this book and to read it to your kids. I don't know if it will make an impact in their lives as much as it did mine. But it is definitly worth reading.

Tucker's Countryside

I wanted to read this book because the book I read before Tucker's Countryside was the Cricket in Time Square. This book is the sequel to the Cricket in Time Square. When I read that there was a sequel to the Cricket in Time Square I looked for it in my bookcase to see if I had it. When I found it I began to read the back of the book and it seemed interesting to me.
The book was about a bird named Robin took Tucker mouse and Harry cat to Connecticut where their old friend Chester cricket lived. They found each other and Chester showed them around the countryside. They found out that his home was going to be destroyed by the bulldosers to make room for the new homes. The towns people won't have a place to play either. Now it is up to Tucker mouse and Harry cat to save the land.
My favorite part of the book was when Harry cat found this girl that would take care of him. This part is my favorite because the girl reminds me of myself because I have five cats and three of them are strays. Harry cat was going to stay at the little girl's house, but he decided to go back to Time Square with Tucker mouse towards the end of the book.

Awesome work

Except for Charlotte's Web, this is perhaps the best young person's book in existence. The narrative makes you visualize so thoroughly you will be left with the feeling that you have seen a movie. Don't miss this book!
