It's a brief introduction into the development of devops and a lot of complaining as to why people who are exploring or aren't exploring devops are dumb.

Should have been titled "Why is DevOps?"

One of the negative reviews did have a good point, that this essay comes off as a bit of a rant. But then why shouldn't it? Dealing with IT Operations, historically speaking, is usually a pain in the SCSI port. The real value being provided here isn't so much in telling you what DevOps is (which, to be honest, the subject is almost glossed over and only the main talking points are mentioned). No, the value is in telling you *why* DevOps was an inevitability, what purpose it serves today and what it is fixing.

If you read this and find yourself nodding your head, commiserating with the pain described by the author, maybe your shop is a candidate for a DevOps cultural transformation. And really, that's what it is, a cultural transformation. The technology is all for naught without it.

I'm reading this from the perspective of an operations team leader, and of someone successfully affecting a DevOps business transformation in a software development shop.

Beginning to think about and understand what DevOps actually means...

O'Reilly produces some useful (and short) ebook reports that help clarify and educate those of us in the tech industry. I just finished What is DevOps? - Infrastructure as Code by Mike Loukides, and it fits squarely in that "short ebook" category. In fact, you could make the argument that this is really a long blog post instead of an ebook, since it's only around 16 pages. But when the price is free, why quibble over semantics?

Loukides makes the argument that the NoOps movement is a misnomer. The function of Operations in a company such as Netflix or Amazon still continues to exist regardless of what might be inferred otherwise. The more relevant question is centered around what Operations actually means in the current technology state. Loukides states that the Operations team and the Development team become more closely allied, so that applications can take full advantage of PaaS (Platform as a Service). This adds redundancy and resiliency as core elements of an application, as opposed to just tossing the application over the fence for someone else to worry about if something goes wrong.

What Is DevOps? is by no means an exhaustive examination of the DevOps topic. At 16 pages, it's barely enough to get started. However, it *is* enough to get you thinking in the right direction, and provides the start of a framework for you to "know what you don't know". It's worth the few minutes (and no cost) to download and read.

I first read this book in high school and if you apply the techniques it preaches (and most importantly GET SHOTS UP EVERY DAY) you will amaze yourself at how much you improve. It covers more or less every sensible shot in basketball (including hook shots and dunking), and explains things clearly, kind of if you were trying to teach a child something. Over the years I haven't been able to play as much as I would have liked, and have not been shooting as well as I should be so I re-purchased the book for that reason. I haven't lost the competitive nature to want to be a sharp shooter and I know retracing my steps with this book will put me back where I need to be. Moral of the story: book is a great tool for someone trying to make themselves a better shooter.

I can, I will, I choose, I have, I love, I create, I enjoy ... to write a review of Conscious Language

Great to see this book finally on Kindle. I write this review as an owner of the paperback, which I had to import to Australia. This book came highly recommended to me, so I had to get a hold of it. And I, in turn, highly recommend this book to anyone who still doesn't have it.

I've been interested in the power of words to shape our reality for a long, long time. There is a hidden subtext to the words we speak and hear and read. And while Bob's book isn't esoteric in a mystery school kind of way, it is esoteric in a more psychological context - how we betray our heart's desire with the words we speak to ourselves and to one another.

It's clear that Bob has studied this for years, and has systemised his knowledge. If you are new to this, then you would do well to get his book, and get up to speed quickly.

Many people are now catching on to the spells that words cast - Laurel Airica, for example, who exposes it in a poetic performance way (see youtube videos). Bob's work, is just as passionate and informed (possibly deeper) and is much more satisfying intellectually. As I said, it's systemised. Whereas other people's work tends to be more unstructured.

It's not often I have the opportunity to offer the first review of a book that I HAVE TO HAVE in my library. I consider it an honour to announce - declare - to others, that yes, this is a book that can change your life, and help others to change theirs.

But be warned. Once you get a taste for this, it stirs up your appetite for more. I ended up acquiring a number of his video packages, and have taken pages of notes. This man is full of insight.

Would you like to learn more about yourself?

This was a great book to read and learn how to help you apply yourself with where you are at today in life.
It is not to help you sale product or manifest material things. It is going to help you realize the importance of our language with speak and hear. The gifts of the fruits will grow with abundance when we see our body and hear the language. More importantly we will love like Jesus ask of us too on this earth.

About the Author
Cindy Hazan, PhD, is Associate Professor in the Department of Human Development at Cornell University. A recent recipient of the Scientific Impact Award from the Society of Experimental Social Psychology, she is an internationally recognized scholar whose seminal work on affectional bonds helped define a new field of study in social and personality psychology. Her 1987 article (coauthored with Phillip R. Shaver) "Romantic Love Conceptualized as an Attachment Process" is one of the ten most cited articles ever published in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology. In addition to her original theoretical and empirical work, Dr. Hazan designed the course "Human Bonding," which she has continued to develop and teach for 25 years at Cornell.

Mary I. Campa, PhD, is Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychology at Skidmore College, where she teaches courses in introductory psychology, adolescent development, and interpersonal relationships. Dr. Campa's research focuses on adolescent and adult development, with an emphasis on close relationships. Her current work is aimed at understanding the reasons why attachment relationships (our closest relationships) are unique and enduring.

About the Author
Hilary Stewart is an award-winning author best known for her books on Northwest Coast First Nations cultures. She has also been involved in teaching outdoor education and wilderness survival courses for many years, as well as studying the ethnobotany of the coast First Nations, and has an extensive practical experience in the use of plants. She lives on Quadra Island in British Columbia.

A classic introduction to a distinctive art

I first bought a copy of this book at Munro's in the mid 1980s. Preparing for a recent trip to Alaska I reread it. (Wouldn't want to confuse an eagle for a raven or a bear for a beaver, after all!) I also bought a new copy to take along and possibly bang up.

In roughly 100 pages Stewart takes the reader through the six groups of Northwest Coast people, the basics of their art, the geometric components of the art, how the form is adapted to different shapes and uses, a description of each of the major motifs (primarily animals), and finally a discussion of stylistic variations between the six cultures.

A book this length will not make you an expert. But this book succinctly provides a basic understanding, sufficient to understand the figures of a totem pole or the subject of a print. As such, it is a great overview for someone wanting an introduction to Northwest Coast art either as an end in itself, or as a gateway to further reading.

Awesome primer chock full of illustrations

This is just what I was looking for. Gives a simple to understand basic overview of a number of Northwest Pacific tribes' illustrative arts styles. Puts the history in a modern perspective and speaks on the resurgence of Pacific NW Native art in the print-making realm.

The author then goes on to detail the characteristics of a numerous animals and figures represented in the art. Each animal gets a page or two with great and varied examples of artwork representing that animal. For instance, there will be a paragraph or two in simple language giving the description on the left hand page, and on the right hand page will be four different images of Pacifc NW art depicting the animal. Sometimes there is only one image for an unusual animal, but they are all well chosen and reproduced.

I have no reservations recommending this book to anyone interested in the subject, particularly if you're interested in creating art inspired by these traditions. My ~only~ complaint is that the book could be about 1/3 larger size wise, it's somewhat on the small size and would make a great coffee table book if larger.
Along the same lines, I noticed one or two pages where the typesetting of page seemed to run off the edge. I'm guessing this was previously released in a larger edition and has been reformatted to fit this slightly smaller size. Even with these minor criticisms, I consider this book a must-have on the subject.

This book was assigned for my university-level class on NWC formline art, and with good reason. It details the standards of the art form (shapes, colors, subjects etc), illustrates variations among the various peoples of the NWC, and then illustrates how the rules are being stretched by contemporary artists who have been key to keeping the styles alive. This book will help aspiring formline artists understand how to make this kind of art, and it will enable anyone to be able to interpret what they're seeing when they look at formline - at minimum appreciate how the art is put together, and what's being depicted - and with some practice, the specific nation that originated the particular style of formline they're looking at.
